Walking by this house, you might not notice how spectacular it is. Besides the extremely artistic door, somehow it just doesn't scream out at you, begging you to notice. But experiencing the interior is quite a different thing! Memorable, magical, magnificent! Those are some of the words that come to mind.

Shame on me for not showing it to you sooner. It's now, seemingly, in escrow. But if you absolutely must have it, they say anything can be had for the right price, especially in this town!

The Gell-Mann residence (1956), by architect William E. Blurock, is, per the listing, "... a house that was never meant to shout..," and I promise you I had not read that before I started this post. So this is what this house exudes… A quiet confidence (also on the listing paperwork, read after I stated it! Meaning this house simply speaks so clearly its descriptions).

Privately commissioned by one of the great geniuses of the 20th century, 1969 Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann, this nationally registered landmark was the celebrated physicist's home for over two decades, during which time, as a professor at Caltech, he did some of his most important work, transforming our understanding of… matter! His work Really matters!!!

And Blurock is also quite the Superstar! I suggest you look him up as his history is fascinating.

As far as the design goes - I'd rather let the photos speak for themselves. You can see the beautiful shapes and angles, the way the spaces flow into one another, the walls of windows, the use of colored glass and wood, the skylights and breathtaking bespoke lighting... The perfect balance between symmetry and asymmetry is achieved in this architecture. And of course, the backyard landscaping is perfection.

This was another house that I loved so much, I could barely tear myself away.

Do you feel the same?

Here's to Modern Monday!

Included in our current exhibition “Where I End and You Begin” is a group of Jon Huck’s iconic enigmatic heads.

These captivating paintings of the same subject are simultaneously haunting yet comforting and evoke both delicate and dramatic emotions through their nuanced gestures. Mysteriously shifting over time, feeling familiar while off balance, they are always tenderly human.

. . .

Where I End and You Begin is a dynamic three-person exhibition featuring Liv Aanrud, Julia Curran, and Jon Huck—on view through August 30. Curated by Shannon Rae Fincke, this exhibition brings together a trio of contemporary Los Angeles artists combining figuration and symbolism to communicate complex and highly charged psychological, sociological and emotional experiences.

Where I End and You Begin explores the friction between isolation and connection, asking where the self stops and the other starts. While each artist works within a distinct medium and thematic focus, their individual voices unite to reflect modern vulnerability in an increasingly hyper-connected yet deeply isolating world. Whether working in textiles, printmaking, painting, or sculpture, each artist creates dreamlike, enigmatic figures suspended between reality and imagination—communicating through expressive proportions, colors, symbols, and narrative ambiguity.

The Middle Room is open by appointment and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-3pm while the exhibition is on view.
