thank you for these beautiful days 💫
with @trishabrowncompany at @watermillcenter ✨

and to those behind the scenes who made this unlikely invitation possible: to be in conversation and oftentimes collision with one of the most perfect and elegant gems of dance making and choreographic thinking ever :

GLACIAL DECOY

my younger dancer/maker self, who came up in nyc in the late 80’s, early 90’s seeing the iconic works of trisha brown and how deeply but perhaps obliquely and unconsciously embedded they are in me, is pinching myself older self right now.

can’t wait for
more to come
with the off the charts
and generous artists:

@likeburrimcold
@cat_kirk
@savannahgaillard
@spencer__weidie
@ashley.merker
@need_pat

🌦️DROP-INS NOW WELCOME! | REGISTER TODAY for Untypical and Portable: your body at home with Jon Kinzel @jonkinzel

For more info and to register click the #linkinbio or visit:
https://movementresearch.org/workshops/2996/

When: Mon, 9, 2026 | 10am-12pm
Location: MR Studios (150 First Avenue)
Price: $25/session, drop-ins welcome!

This workshop will be in fluid dialogue with improvisational, compositional, choreographic, and visual art practices. Participants should possess a high threshold for personal, physical, and formal experimentation, and an openness towards connecting dance and object-making within the temporal realm and the wider world. Our time together will be informed by my experience with performing in spaces — galleries, lofts, clubs — typically carved out of larger structures, that were wildly varied in shape and size. The differing spaces required me to be adaptable, and they also brought to light the features of the performance itself: spatial proportions, audience positions, sound environments, and architectural features. I learned to approach my performances as temporary installations, in which drawings/mark making and sculptural forms, executed during the dance, served to situate myself and the audience within a mutable, embodied social space. Prior experience with interdisciplinary work need not be a concern.

What to expect:
Participants can expect to be led through a warm up and to explore a drawing exercise designed to spark connections between visual art and dance. I will supply all the materials. Participants will have time to work on their own and develop short solos to share with the class (duet and trio configurations are possible if desired).

Choreographer, dancer, and educator @irenehultmanmonti invites @wallycardonax
and @jonkinzel in “Internal Landscape and External Environment,” two friends of hers whose movement practices she’s observed for over 10 years. She guides the conversation toward the energy, intensity and resonance between them when they perform together, alivening a kind trust in their togetherness.

Wally and Jon are dance artists aware of their aging bodies, and Iréne probes the evolution of their bodily self-knowledge. For her, aging brings clarity. She calls it crystallic: bodies communicating legibly to a spectator, even when spritely movements are not involved. She views this crystallization as an athleticism of its own, rooted in endurance and passion.

In our recently published article guest edited by @irenehultmanmonti, “Internal Landscape and External Environment,” choreographer and performer @jonkinzel speaks with Wally Cardona on the power of perception within dance, and the splendor of the contrast between dancer and audience experience.

Jon Kinzel
“It might have been your show. Yeah, that was down by the Brooklyn Bridge. You have an ability to make a lot of material that can be set –generally speaking. This one solo, I remember, almost looked improvisational because of the kind of timings and the impulses to move; it had a lot of flow, like one thing was going into the next, a kind of athleticism. There were a lot of curves.

I remember talking to you after the show. I said, “So it was improvised, right?” And then you said, “No, it’s all choreographed.” It was a nice moment where I got some insight into a masterful way that Wally can shape – like a kinesthetic master or something. His sense of flow and constant moving; it is very internal in a way, because of the orchestration of the body, knowing exactly where everything is going.

That’s something I really admired. And it was fun for me to hear you say “No, it was all choreographed.” I think you felt it was fun for you to hear that. You were like, “No.” Your solo had a freshness of seeming improvised but it was all set. That was interesting to me because it was such a specific solo artist doing something as a mover. I really admired it because it showed a way of thinking about the figure in space that, to me, could be seen through the lens of visual art and dance.”

New from Critical Correspondence: Internal Landscape and External Environment: A Conversation between Jon Kinzel and Wally Cardona, and The Process of Self-Penetration, Motherhood and Art Making : A Conversation between Anabella Lenzu and Preeti Vasudevan

To read these pieces, visit #linkinbio

Guest edited by Irene Hultman Monti, a conversation between Jon Kinzel and Wally Cardona began with a discussion of them dancing together in 2016, leading into the realities of aging and dance. “This conversation has shown me that in whatever climate we are as a society, they are surviving and continuing with their crafts, their ideas and their convictions,” Hultman writes in her editor’s note.

CC’s second article between Anabella Lenzu and Preeti Vasudevan is a meditation on what it means to be a mother while maintaining a life devoted to art. From Lenzu’s contributor’s note: “Both women wrestle with questions that have no easy answers: What does it mean to be a ‘good mother’? What does it mean to be a ‘good artist’? Can the two coexist without conflict?”
