POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This Friday, former BMHS X-C and Track alumni Tyler Thompson, will toe the line at the UTMB Mont Blanc ultra in an attempt to finish the 106 mile ultramarathon. UTMB is known as the most competitive and prestigious (and toughest) ultra marathon in the world, as it circumnavigates Mt Blanc, starting in Chamonix, France, through the Alps of Italy, Switzerland and then returning to France.

Thompson's story is an impressive one. He started running his Soph year of high school with his friends, and was a tough, not amazingly fast runner. In high school, he peaked as the 8th man on one of our first teams to make the state meet in 2004, breaking the 20 min barrier once. He ears had fun training and supporting his team. He and his teammates' dedication helped to launch what our xc team has been for the last two decades.

Tyler ran hard and was committed throughout high school, but really started to pick up steam in college and beyond. He caught fire in the marathon and has finished 20 of the 26 mile races, qualifying for Boston in 7 consecutive races. In more recent years, Thompson has shifted to trail ultra races, racing in a total of 15 ultras, including 8 over 50 miles, many being 100 milers. His quest to run UTMB has spanned many years of qualification races, long trips, and thousands of miles trying to accumulate necessary points to qualify to run in Chamonix.

Running in the BMHS X-C alumni relay last month, Tyler was quick to point out, "you never know what kid in the middle of your team is being fueled with inspiration to go on to do something for their entire life". Indeed Tyler - your dedication over two decades to follow your dreams and let nothing stand in the way, is nothing short of inspirational.

All of the BMHS X-C community is wishing you all the luck and joy in your journey starting on Friday. Tear it up amigo!

Starting on Friday at 5:30 am, two teams made completely of 20 plus alumni of Battle Mountain X-C will be running the Wild West Relay, a 200 mile race from Fort Collins to Steamboat. Both teams are expected to reach Steamboat around noon on Saturday. Any alumni/family along the way should come out to support, or meet up for the party at the finish. Good luck team!

It's taken a few weeks to come down off the high of the Wild West relay. Two teams comprised completely of Battle Mountain Xc alumni, ran the 200 mile relay from Fort Collins to Steamboat Springs. 21 alumni ran on the two teams, spanning over 2 decades of XC teams. Making it even more special Riley, Logan and Kelli all raced as part of the relay as well. The crew hammered the race too, winning the co-ed division and getting 2nd in the ultra division while only running 7 guys over 200 miles! It was the first time I've ever worn a BMHS jersey.

After the race finished, we were joined for a massive celebration that continued long into the night. Other members of past X-C teams and their families joined the party, and we finished with over 50 members of the past BMHS X-C family telling stories, laughing and having a great time re-connecting and meeting the different generations. Big thanks to Tyler Thompson and Jonny Stevens for organizing the massive event. You guys gave us all a truly special gift!

This past weekend, 20 plus Battle Mountain XC alumni ran in the Wild West Relay, a 200 mile race from Fort Collins to Steamboat. Another 30 plus alumni, friends and family joined the runners in Steamboat for a massive team reunion and celebration after the race. The event also commemorated the team's first State Championship 20th year anniversary. The members of the team spanned well over two decades. The event was incredible in every way, especially the multi generational group coming together to run, laugh and spend time together in the Colorado mountains. Both the race and the after party reinforced what makes the team so special, to so many, for so long - the strong connections of athletes, coaches, and families across the ages. And the teams ripped! The 12 person team won the co-ed division and had the 2nd fastest time of any relay. The "ultra" team running with only 7 members had the 4th fastest overall time. Impressive for a bunch of old guys/gals!

To all that couldn't make it, we missed your presence too! It was a weekend that we will never forget. Gigantic thanks to Tyler Thompson and Jonny Stevens for their countless hours and huge investment in time to organize and recruit the group and plan out the many logistics. You gave all of us a once in a lifetime gift.
