【Jon Spencer】
「Sick of Being Sick!」
(ROCK)

—————————

A reissue of the 2024 album by garage rock titan Jon Spencer, featuring The Bobby Lees’ rhythm section—Kendall Wind and Macky “Spider” Bowman. Stripping away all ornamentation down to a minimal power-trio setup of guitar, bass, and drums, the record hits hard with distorted fuzz guitars clashing against feral barks on cuts like "WRONG" and "DISCONNECTED." Reclaiming pure, unfiltered noise as a stand against modern chaos, it is a 100% pure, solid masterpiece!

Baby Driver was a movie that completely blindsided me. I already loved Edgar Wright from Shaun of the Dead & Scott Pilgrim..so I knew the guy had style..but THIS felt him taking EVERYTHING I loved about his work & just..perfecting it.

And let me tell you..the music is a HUGE reason why this movie works as well as it does.

I didn’t fully realize just how much I loved the soundtrack until shortly after I bought it..when I went on a cruise and discovered about a day in it was the ONLY album I’d downloaded to my phone. Soooo..it’s all I really had to listen to..& for the rest of the trip I just played the damn thing over & over and over again.

Crazy thing is..somehow it NEVER got old..& that accidental little marathon I had with it turned it into just one of my absolute FAVORITE soundtracks of all time.

What makes it so fascinating is that Edgar Wright didn’t just pick songs after the movie was finished. A bunch of the scenes were literally written & choreographed AROUND the music.

In the movie..the main character “Baby” is constantly wearing earbuds to drown out his tinnitus..so the soundtrack becomes his internal world..and the editing, gunshots, footsteps & car chases keep snapping into rhythm with whatever he’s hearing.

Just about every track on here is a standout & they’re all just so important to the movie too. For instance..the opening getaway scene set to Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s Bellbottoms is just..one of the coolest movie openings I’ve ever seen.

Queen’s Brighton Rock turns another chase into absolute chaos..while Simon & Garfunkel’s Baby Driver gives the whole thing its title & feels PERFECT closing out this strange musical universe.

Wright’s taste is all over this soundtrack..but the sequencing LEGIT makes it feel like one giant story.

As I said..I’ve heard this thing a RIDICULOUS number of times now..& it STILL works. Being stuck with only this soundtrack on that cruise could’ve soooo easily backfired..& it REALLY should’ve made me sick of it forever.

Instead it permanently turned Baby Driver into one of those soundtracks I’ll probably carry around for the rest of my life.

30TH ANNIVERSARY

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Now I Got Worry (1996)
Matador
Favourite Track: 2Kindsa Love

The Blues Explosion are one of the most important bands in my musical journey, not only did they lead me to the Blues and a trip to the Deep South to see the crossroads where Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil, but they also infused the DNA of the first band I ever joined, a trashy garage punk 4-piece called Seven Boyfriends, a musical tour-de-force in which I played a metal trashcan, slightly out of time with the drummer....we split up on stage supporting fellow garage punk travellers Comanechi after 3 gigs. Legends in our own heads.

Anyway, 'Now I Got Worry', the fifth album from JSBX turns 30 today, it's my favourite album of theirs because it's the best example of them marrying their messy noise-punk with catchy, danceable blues grooves, and it's sexy as fuck.

@boss_hog_bitches 13-10-1995 @effenaar

Een match made in heaven imo!
