BIGSOUND 2026 - Day 1, 1st September (PART 1)

BIGSOUND officially kicked off in style, with a complimentary breakfast put on by “The Brits” at the venue that was formerly known as The Sound Garden. For me at least, it will still take me some time to get used to calling it the Pig ‘N’ Whistle. Several speakers who are involved in the UK music industry took to the stage to offer their fair share of gratitude and other announcements. I was able to catch up with two artists in Jonte and Tiffany Grace, who have both been interviewed on my show. Tiffany had recently completed her extensive album tour of Queensland and Byron Bay, which was very successful! I also met a sibling musical duo with the name LamBros, who were really keen to be there! Networking and meeting new people is pretty much what BIGSOUND is all about!

The next networking location was The Wickham for the now-traditional Women & Gender Diverse Folk In Music Brunch. While there I reconnected with artist Clare Hudson, after she and I had met at the Roundtables event at last year’s BIGSOUND. I met Louella for the first time, and I’ll be playing one of her songs on a future episode of my show. Faith Kayrooz was coming off the back of a successful launch of her debut album release “Evergrowing”, and was extremely happy about it! One person in particular I was excited to meet was fellow interviewer Charlie In The Rain. As it turns out, she had been following me on Instagram as well! It was wonderful to finally see “Charlie In The Flesh”, and I found out that her interviewing style is remarkably similar to my own! We both prefer it free-flowing and conversational, as if we have known our guests for years!

EPISODE 54 - 17TH JUNE 2026

PROTIS INTERVIEWS BY REQUEST: JONTE

Brisbane singer-songwriter Jonte is originally from Mackay. He released his most recent song "Fantasize" in January of this year, and his previous single came out three years prior to that. He looks set to bring out more music later this year, and he joins Alan for a chat about his musical progress so far.

Jonte and I only met for the first time at the 4ZZZ studios for our interview, and we pretty much clicked instantly! He produces his own songs, after having taught himself the process and how to use the various software programs. I can totally relate to that myself, having done likewise with my Digital Audio Workstation of choice and putting together my own creations over the years. For the record, he uses Ableton on Mac while I use FL Studio on PC. Different strokes for different folks, as the saying goes. He also mentioned a saying that I had never heard before, about how you have to “be comfortable with the uncomfortable” in certain situations when it comes to the music industry.

Our chat mainly focused on music technology and how far it has evolved over the years of even decades, but we also spoke about his childhood memories among other things. He recounted his rather wild 21st birthday celebrations, while I chose not to do likewise! Jonte writes straight from the heart and his life experiences, which gives him a great deal of song material to work with. We discussed his songwriting process, as well as the gigs and shows he has performed at. He outlines the differences between what is a gig and what is a show to him. So much territory was covered, and you will be able to feast your ears on it for yourself on Wednesday the 17th of June from 6pm. I love discovering new artists, and Jonte is absolutely no exception!

Jonte is a pop artist who is originally from Mackay but is now based in Brisbane. His music is full of electronic beats and is very synth-heavy. It almost has that retro 1980s sound to it, but with a modern feel. He produces all of his songs, with his most recent single “Fantasize” having been released back in January this year. That was the first one he had brought out since 2023, due to relocating from Mackay to Brisbane. He has another single on the horizon, which should make its way to streaming platforms in the next month or so.

Jonte had seen that I recently interviewed Tiffany Grace, who also hails from Mackay. He messaged me out of the blue, after a family friend of his at 4ZZZ suggested he get in touch. He is seeking a similar opportunity to the one I gave Tiffany, and on Wednesday the 13th of May his wish will be granted. We will probably talk about his most recent release, as well as other music-related things. He has a lot of experience when it comes to radio, and I’m really into the synth-heavy stuff so there will be plenty to discuss. He told me on Instagram that he is just trying to get his foot in the door. Well I must say this is a great start to his musical life in Brisbane! This interview will air sometime in the next month or so, as the actual date has yet to be finalised. Jonte is one artist to definitely keep an eye on in the years ahead!
