“nothing really matters” by jules. A dreamy, upbeat song that plays like a makeover scene from a 90s teen movie.

«I love blending electronic and acoustic elements, adding complex vocal stacks and harmonies, and writing melodies that get stuck in your head.»

Meet jules, our fiftieth issue.

A blossoming pop/R&B singer, songwriter, and performer known for her powerful, versatile vocals and complex vocal layering, reminiscent of Ariana Grande, Lizzy McAlpine, and SZA. Lyrically, she aims to confront the uncomfortably real truths of life, love, and womanhood, balancing vulnerability with tongue-in-cheek bluntness.

We talked about how it all began (musical theater, choir, and a competitive collegiate a cappella group, which still shapes her vocal stacks and harmonies today), her influences (Ariana Grande, SZA, Lizzy McAlpine, Caroline Polachek, Remi Wolf), her latest single «nothing really matters,» a dreamy, upbeat song and the first she’s written speaking positively about a romantic relationship, and Lollapalooza as a dream stage.

guide:human is our interview series with rising artists, bands, and musicians on inspiration, process, and the stories behind the sound.

13 years, 1 championship, and a million boots and cats later, here it is - the final boss of my a cappella journey

I can’t describe how excited I am to share this with the world. Anyone who met me after the year 2018 knew who The Nor’easters were and how much of a fan I was. I thought, what a gag it would be if I could join. Consider that gag clocked because I had no idea what I was getting into. From day 1 of building this set I was so excited just to be in the room, and every moment between then and this studio release has been the more fulfilling then I would’ve ever imagined. Shoutout to the SPHS Pitchforks & @nsaccent for getting me to this point, and to The Nor’easters: thanks for letting me in on the Magic.💕✨

My final project with this group released today…

Can’t begin to sum up my experience with this group, and can’t come anywhere close to fitting it all in 20 photos. It’s pretty cool to work so hard at something for years and see yourself become the very best at it. I’m so grateful for the complete and utter absence of “what ifs” with this group and for everyone who made this year and the four before it so special.

There’s no better way to go out than with this release. It’s shocking, stunning, awe-inspiring, and just disrespectfully good. Everyone involved put so much into it, and it was literally deemed the best 10 mins of a cappella on the planet a few months ago sooooooo if I could humbly recommend you take a listen you won’t be disappointed 🧎‍♂️
