Mixteco communities in Monterey, Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties have been buzzing about the story about a baby found dead on the side of the road, and the ensuing police activity — in cities like Salinas, Watsonville, San Jose, Fresno, and all the way to the southern Mexican states of Guerrero and Oaxaca.

Among California Mixtecos, there is disbelief and disapproval of Sergio Gálvez Pérez’ alleged actions. And it’s also prompting questions about what could have been done to prevent the tragedy, and what kind of services and outreach should be done to better support Indigenous communities. Locals viewed it as another national headline that reminds a vulnerable group of Indigenous Mexicans of their tenuous place in the United States — and Mexico.

On March 26, hours before their graduation, Zach, another mentor, and seven youth interns went to get coffee. They ended up detained by two dozen LAPD officers with a helicopter overhead. No charges. Months later, still no explanation.

This week @calmatters told Zach’s story.
Read the full story on their website.
If you want to stand up for Zach and the youth who were there that day, and get answers, click the Take Action link in my bio.

Del Rey Oaks police say they were notified in advance that immigration officers would conduct an enforcement operation at Monterey Regional Airport earlier this month. But neither the county sheriff’s office nor Monterey Airport management were aware Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had detained a woman at the airport until a local human rights organization reported the incident on social media.

The detention is part of a recent pattern of ICE agents detaining individuals at airports in San Francisco, Oakland, Denver, Las Vegas and Connecticut.

California City is the largest immigration detention center in California, with the capacity to hold 2,560 people. When the Department of Justice visited the facility last year, 942 people were held there.

This year, on May 27, Lofgren (CA-18), and fellow California Democratic Representatives Kevin Mullin (CA-15), Luz Rivas (CA-29) and George Whitesides (CA-27) arrived unannounced to inspect the detention center.
