Japan is turning human footsteps into sustainable, clean electricity by installing innovative piezoelectric tiles across high-traffic urban areas like Tokyo Station and Shibuya Station. This technology works because the specialized floor tiles compress slightly under the mechanical weight of a pedestrian’s step, generating a small electric charge from the resulting physical pressure. While the energy harvested from a single person is quite small, the cumulative power generated by millions of daily commuters is successfully harnessed to illuminate low-energy LED displays, operate electronic ticket gates, and power localized station lighting without relying on the primary power grid.
