We would like to announce that one of our own, Joseph Cutler, completed his PhD in Plant Pathology last year!

Within a collaboration project between Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany, the Universidad Nacional of Bogotá, Colombia, BIOREBA Agro-Diagnostics of Reinach, Switzerland, and the Colombian Institute of Agriculture (ICA), his research focused on the diagnosis of the viruses that cause major damage in Colombian fruit exports, specifically cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana), purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) and ornamental rose (Rosa sp.)

His thesis presents a pilot protocol in plant pathogen detection for farmers and stakeholders to develop a recommendation for a certification program for virus tested planting material.

Before completing his PhD, Joseph received a Bachelor of Agricultural Sciences degree from the University of Maryland, College Park (2010) and a Master of Science degree in Integrated Natural Resource Management from Humboldt University of Berlin (2013).

He works now as Director of Agriculture and Human Resources for Race-West Company after living in Berlin for ten years where he was responsible for developing international trading partnerships and importing US sweet potatoes to Europe.

He is passionate about connecting with plant pathologists, as well as informed traders interested in natural resource management, food safety, environmental protection, and worker’s rights.
