Couple more pictures from the photography workshop that I hosted just over a week ago. Honourable mentions to @josh.bogs & @janebell_pics for taking part. Really looking forward to hosting another workshop in January, I’d love to see more of you come along to the next one, dates and times to be decided. 🫶🏻

Africa has many different accents, but Hollywood often uses just one made-up version. This can feel lazy and unfair.

Why not show real African voices and tell our stories the right way?

it’s 2025—and this is no longer just “entertainment.”
Accents shape perception,
and how they’re portrayed influences how viewers perceive cultures and people they’ve never actually encountered.

Some accents have been portrayed so well, they’ve branded entire countries :
The British accent is likened Intelligence, class, control.
The French accent? Romance, elegance, charm.
The New York accent? Gritty, fast-talking, street smart.

But the “African” accent”?
What is an African accent?
There is no single African accent.
We are a continent of 54 countries, with rich, diverse cultures and traditions.
and not a monolith.

If a character from any culture is going to be portrayed, then attention to detail should be the standard—
just like it is for British or Australian characters, where the accent is almost always spot on,
thanks to dialect coaches, native actors, and authentic slang.

This isn’t a political rant.
It’s a reminder: Culture representation isn’t just about being seen—it’s about being seen right.

Now that you’re more aware… do with that information what you will.

Malcolm X once said
"The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses."

Once again @josh.bogs does a stellar job in breaking down the discrepancies in relation to how different parts of the world are presented in the media and film industry. Very recently in the UK there was a series on #netflix called adolescence but there was uproar because the perpetrator was a young white boy, the reason for this was "only black boys 🔪🗡️" which simply isn't true these crimes take place all over the UK by people of all different backgrounds, however, when a certain narrative is used it's easy to vilify a certain group for political or financial gain. If you grew up in the 80'a or 90's you knew which groups of people were presented as terror...... Or who were presented as freedom fighters, which group didn't even know it was Christmas or who were just facing unfortunate times. It is all by design, but it's time to change the narrative.

We will always support work that challenges the status quo and shows the real perspective, we all know there is good and bad in everything but we also know the media and entertainment industry have been very one sided.

This isn't a political post we're just changing the narrative

Massive respect to @josh.bogs for making this point so eloquently.
It's 2025, how we show up is important but in our absence, how we are represented is imperative. For too long, western movie companies have gotten away with using generic "African" or "Caribbean" accents while simultaneously ensuring that the European / American accents are fully accurate. Accuracy of representation is important across the board and this post needs to be taken seriously

Is the accuracy of accents in movies important to you?
