Where do her works really begin?
“I work mostly with food, specifically fruits and vegetables, so when I think about where my work begins, I find myself reflecting upon the seeds, soil, rain, and sun. My work really begins where these elements collide to create the food that we eat. When I think about where my work begins, I also think about the labour that goes into growing, cultivating, transporting and selling these foods. All these steps are foundational; they allow me to do the work that I do. When I begin my work, it has already been in the making for many months."

We are excited to welcome Lucy Gill and Josh Jensen to the KIAC Artist in Residence Program for the month of September!

Lucy Gill & Josh Jensen
August 24th – September 30th , 2026

Unceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories (Vancouver) and Amiskwacîwâskahikan, Treaty 6 Territory, (Edmonton). Now based in Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang (Montréal)

Lucy Gill and Josh Jensen share a collaborative practice rooted in slow making, care, and attention to everyday material life. Working across sculpture, analogue photography, organic processes, and sustainable material reuse, they explore preservation,
transformation, and accumulation as sites of memory, labour, and exchange. Through intuitive, process-based methods, their work forms living archives shaped by time, touch, and use, modelling collaborative and sustainable approaches to artistic practice.

Their proposed residency builds on their shared investigations into preservation, labour, care, and material lifecycles, adapting their practice to northern ecologies through collaboration with the Klondike Valley Nursery, home to Canada’s northernmost orchard.

Using food preservation as both artistic method and social practice, they will work with apples grown in the Yukon to explore how cultural knowledge, ecological adaptation, and community care are shaped by extreme seasonal conditions. Their practice emphasizes slow, cyclical processes that foreground care and maintenance. In the North, where growing seasons are short and preservation is essential, apples offer an accessible entry point into conversations about survival, interdependence, and sharing knowledge.

Here, they plan to continue making preservatives through historic processes such as dehydration, fermentation, canning, pickling, and fruit leather production. For the first week of their residency, they are volunteering at the Klondike Valley Nursery and learning about apples in Northern climates and making connections with locals.

Workshop Announcement 📣
We have a new date for the Introduction to Sustainable Signage workshop!

This workshop is for emerging artists who are curious about weaving sustainability into their art, curatorial practices and exhibition-making practices. The FOFA Gallery’s Sustainability team will share an overview of different approaches to eco-friendly exhibition signage, drawing from a shared collaboration with the FOFA Gallery’s Exploring Sustainability Across the Arts Signage Toolkit and their Sustainable Signage Menu.
The session will include short presentations and plenty of time to try out different materials and methods hands-on. It’s a chance to test, play, and think together about how small design choices can shape more sustainable practices in the arts.

In English with Joé Côté-Rancourt and Josh Jensen, Sustainability Co-curators at the FOFA Gallery
Wednesday, July 15th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm
In person - EV Building, 2nd Floor, Room 2.776

some beauty documentation from @amedaroche and video by @kimurabyol of a recent commission for @centreskol’s exhibition celebrating the history of Librairie L’Androgyne, montreal’s first queer bookstore.

chemigrams with dirt, spit and lye printed on backlit film and silk organza, and a text made of dirt installed by @josh.jensen 🤍

—

Considering soil as a witness, “What Fills a Hole?” turns to the ground to generate images from what a place might remember.

The project is rooted in the history of L’Androgyne Bookstore, one of Montreal’s earliest mixed-gender and mixed-sexuality spaces, active from 1973 to 2002. Before becoming a fixed location, L’Androgyne existed as a mobile idea, relocating five times alongside urban change and the migration of queer life across the city. These pasts surface through dirt collected outside the bookstore’s five former addresses on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Crescent Street, and Atateken Street. Gathered from planters and cracks in the pavement, the material is soiled, contaminated, and embedded with debris, carrying both visible and invisible traces of the relational and affective worlds the site once supported. Processed through photographic methods and integrated into an installation combining image, text, textile, and light, the ground becomes a collaborator in the retelling of what occurred—here, there, and elsewhere. The work asks how place might act as an agentic voice in the transmission of memory, and how new worlds can emerge from the remnants of those that came before.
