Quick story about this great young man:
• • •
2 years ago, I joined a group of black Dalton alumni who had come together in the wake of 2020's George Floyd cultural upheaval with an intent to instill real change in our alma mater. While my experience had its own unique challenges, I was only able to achieve and grow into an artist because of the platform that my predecessors laid out before me. In this group, dubbed the Dalton Black Alumni Task Force, I was able to learn from and collaborate with fellow black alumni who experienced some of the worst of what our country's racist history has to offer, at times when the conversation around how to integrate elite independent schools didn't even exist with any sort of sophistication. I was even blessed enough to meet a fellow alum who is directly related to the 1st black male and female students who ever attended Dalton ☝🏽

In the course of our outreach, we strove more than anything to connect with the students, to let them know that they aren't entering into the worlds of higher education and their eventual careers alone. We aimed to be the contacts and supporters for them that they needed in a way that has not always existed in such a direct form. Over the course of these endeavors, I happened to meet a young man named Joshua who listened closely whenever I spoke at the school. As a junior, he asked questions and stayed after talks to consult with me, displaying a real interest in expanding his own creative pursuits.

Well, I found out at the end of their senior year a few months ago that Josh will be pursuing an art degree at SCAD, and that he even put on an independent senior art exhibition with the support of his family 👏🏼 I'm proud to know this young man and proud to be one of the earliest collectors of his work 🎨 This still life reminds me of my studies in the South of France. That was enough for me to know I had to have it (someone else wanted it but they were too slow!). Josh, Go Forth Unafraid! 🐅 and to everyone reading, look out for what this burgeoning artist will accomplish 💪🏽
