Sabu 🇮🇩❤️

I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have travelled to Sabu on this special mission with Nick. Having travelled to Indonesia many times, we had always wanted to experience an opportunity where we could give back to a community like this. There were certainly plenty of unknowns, but also a real sense of excitement about what lay ahead.

From the moment we arrived, we felt so warmly welcomed by Feby at @pusatbelajar.eden who started the school and has created such a wonderful place for the children and young people in her community. Along with the young adults and children, she made us feel at home almost immediately.

There were so many highlights — the children’s incredible joy over the simplest games and activities, watching Wei Wei cook traditional Sabu food in a traditional hut and proudly share it with everyone, and seeing the older kids and young adults, trained by Feby as leaders, run the camp with such genuine enthusiasm and care for their community.

Even the communication challenges became part of the fun! With hand gestures, laughter and plenty of Google Translate, we eventually worked each other out. 😂

Making chocolate balls with the kids was another simple but beautiful moment. They absolutely loved it — and it reminded me that sometimes the simplest things bring the greatest joy.

We went to Sabu hoping to give something, but I honestly feel we received so much more. Being around a community with such a simple and calm way of life made me reflect on how busy and noisy our own lives can be, and how much beauty there is in slowing down and appreciating the everyday things.

Fresh coconuts, laughing faces, beautiful shells on the beach and so many wonderful memories.

And then, the perfect goodbye — all the older kids and young adults piled into the back of Feby’s ute with us to drive to the airport and say goodbye. ❤️

We left Sabu feeling incredibly privileged to have been welcomed into their community and with memories and friendships that will stay with us for a very long time.

What an unforgettable experience. 🌴❤️
