Josh Schwartz created The O.C., and by season two he'd built something that shouldn't have existed on network television: a fictional live music venue, The Bait Shop, that existed purely so his favorite bands could show up and perform. He wasn't hiding his enthusiasm. He was, by his own admission, a little drunk on the power of it.

That enthusiasm put him at odds with a chunk of the audience he loved most. Being the guy who name-dropped Death Cab on primetime television, whose show generated seasons' worth of CDs full of indie rock semi-hits and then sold them at Best Buy, made him a target for the same fans who'd been listening to these bands for years. At a panel for the show, someone stood up specifically to tell him to stop playing Death Cab. He was a fan too. He took it to heart.

Josh talks about that tension honestly — being the person responsible for breaking a band wide open and drawing the ire of the people who loved that band first.

Hear more of his story on 2004: The Year Indie Rock Broke. New episodes start September 23 — wherever you listen to podcasts. A designed frame with a post-it note holds a quote that reads: "I was probably a little bit drunk on power, like a kid in a candy shop. Wait, you mean Death Cab will perform, and Modest Mouse will perform?" Josh Schwartz, executive producer, The O.C.

19 years ago, an anonymous blogger with a suspicious amount of access to private information began reporting on the personal lives of Manhattan’s most eligible teenagers. In 2007, that was just another Wednesday night.

There is B.G.G. (Before Gossip Girl) and A.G.G. (After Gossip Girl). A.G.G. gave us a new social vocabulary.

Happy 19 years to the show that convinced an entire generation that Manhattan was one enormous high school where everyone had trust funds, family trauma, and access to a remarkably good blowout.

120,000 of us still think about the fact that Blair Waldorf had a better wardrobe at 17 than most people will have in a lifetime. Some of it is hanging in my closet… and a lot of it is hanging in yours! ♥️

Gossip Girl also gave us the most important journalism lesson of all: If you have the screenshot, you have the story.

Happy 19th to the greatest anonymous source New York has ever seen. Well… second greatest. 💋

XOXO, Poship Girl

Happy 19th anniversary to Gossip Girl. On this day, 19 years ago, melanie91 spotted Serena van der Woodsen with bags in hand at Grand Central. The rest is iconic history ✨
