“Resurrection” ❤️‍🩹 Models: @aavree_ & Nathanael photographer: @jovanprints @shelbylov3 Styling: @shelbylov3 @themuseumdetroit Makeup: @shelbylov3 @jancosmo_ Hair: @allison_chemistry BTS: @shelbylov3 Another of Shelby’s favorite pieces in the DDIB: Chapter 5 Collection entitled Detroit Story 📖 Telling the story of Detroit through the lens of the Black American experience.✨ And now, we’re back to the not so fun side of history. The National Recession of 2008 Caused by multiple factors: the U.S. housing bubble, mortgage crisis, financial products, & banks collapsing. But for Detroit, we were having a whole different set of issues. Shelby calls this time the resurrection of our great city. True to the word, this beautiful city had to “die” to rise again. Detroit’s collapse was caused by an over-reliance on the auto industry, widespread suburbanization “white flight”, racial tension, and a shrinking tax base. These combined pressures caused the city’s population to drop from 1.8 million in 1950 to under 700,000, culminating in a record $18 billion municipal bankruptcy in 2013. And now we know that the other side was a comeback story like no other. This period was a stark contrast to the way the city looks and feels now. As a Detroiter born and raised, the city now could’ve only been able to be produced into what it became by the same people that held it down from 1950-2013. Before it was cool, before the bail out, before Mayor Duggan, and before the NFL draft. Even through the struggles, Detroit always had heart and the grit. This is what a real rebrand is made of. 🤍💙✊🏾✨ Prints of the latest work and collections past are officially available! Comment “RESET” to get yours! #2010s #detroit #detroitartist #rebrand #recession

THE PROOF IS IN. 🥃📸 Detroit, you really showed up for this one. 🖤 Our first-ever PROOF: A Detroit Photography Experience was everything we hoped it would be and so much more. An evening filled with incredible photography, familiar faces, new connections, a little friendly bidding, and a whole lot of love for Detroit’s creative community. Watching the artists see their work printed, framed, and celebrated on the walls was one of our favorite parts of the entire experience. To every artist who trusted us with their work, every friend and family member who came to cheer them on, and everyone who walked through those doors to support local creativity: THANK YOU. And a huge thank-you to our incredible community partners who helped bring this crazy little idea to life. We couldn’t have done it without you. “Resist” ✊🏾 Models: @allison_chemistry @advmadiagne photographer: @jovanprints Styling: @shelbylov3 @themuseumdetroit Makeup: @shelbylov3 @jancosmo_ Hair: @allison_chemistry BTS: @allison_chemistry @shelbylov3 The sixth piece in the DDIB: Chapter 5 Collection entitled Detroit Story 📖 Telling the story of Detroit through the lens of the Black American experience.✨ The sad truth is that as black people, the last time we seemed to be able to effectively rally together and get things done was the late 60s. Our Civil Rights leadership was intentional about unifying us, making us aware that the system, the “powers that be” were and have always tried to divide us in order to conquer us. But with the assassination of Martin, Malcolm, and eventually JFK. Racial and political tensions were very high, similarly to now. It was only a matter of time before something happened. The Detroit Riots of 1968. News of Dr. King’s murder in Memphis, Tennessee, set off grief, shock, and widespread anger across more than 100 U.S. cities, including Detroit. Unrest concentrated heavily along 12th Street (now Rosa Parks Boulevard), from April 4 to April 5, 1968. Crowds smashed storefront windows, threw objects at cars, and started roughly three dozen fires while looting local businesses. Blinded by emotions and rage, we did exactly what they wanted, we destroyed the little that we had. And it’s been a consistent and constant challenge to come together ever since. Beyond Dr. King’s assassination, the unrest was fueled by deep-seated issues that had also sparked the Detroit 1967 riots, including ongoing police brutality, racial profiling, housing segregation, and poverty within Black neighborhoods. We had won the battle for our civil rights but this showed that we lost the war on sticking together as a community. We were being set up to fall apart. This one is a little sobering y’all but we still persevere 🖤💚❤️ Prints of the latest work and collections past are officially available! “Founders” Models: @ameeesie @kassius_.rubin Photographers: @jovanprints @shelbylov3 Styling: @shelbylov3 @ameeesie @kassius_.rubin Makeup: @shelbylov3 @jancosmo_ Hair: @allison_chemistry @shelbylov3 BTS: @allison_chemistry @shelbylov3 Our first piece in the DDIB: Chapter 5 Collection entitled Detroit Story 📖 Telling the story of Detroit through the lens of the Black American experience. Our city’s roots were planted by two distinct groups of people: The Native Americans/Indigenous people who were already here, and would have interacted with some of the first Black peoples like Moors and Black Africans who were known to have traveled to North America as early as 1513. And the French, the name Detroit comes from the French word détroit, meaning “strait” or a narrow passage of water connecting two larger bodies, referring to the Detroit River. Pronounced ‘deh-Twah’ in French, the settlement and renaming of the land came about in 1901. This is where our story begins! Prints of the latest work and collections past are officially available!
