QOTD: What’s an indie book or series you think everyone should read? 💬 I could only ever mean this in the best way, but start the Shattered Crown book series prepared with the knowledge that it will make you fall hard for its characters, then drop you into a haunted cave and threaten to break your heart once you’re in its clutches. (But it’s fine! You’ll be fine. Trust me. 👀) This romantasy features Elyria Lightbreaker, a centuries-old fae who’s sharp, feral, and drowning in unresolved trauma, and Cedric Thorne, a fierce human warrior with protective instincts that belie his programming, particularly once he begins to question the narratives he’s been raised on after actually spending time with fae. What makes their dynamic fresh is the way Gretchen Powell Fox subverts our favorite genre conventions. Elyria is the shadow mommy, if you will. She’s emotionally constipated and a little bit uncouth, and Cedric is her damsel in distress (and there is so much distress—whump goblins, come get your food!). 👏🏼 Their romance is the kind of slow burn that aches in the best way, full of reluctant trust and repressed third-degree yearns. ❤️‍🔥 Among other choice genre favorites, there is a Pride and Prejudice-esque hand flex, as well as a “who did this to you?” But when I say it’s a slow burn, what I mean is any slower, and they’d literally be on fire. But it’s great! So bring your marshmallows! 🔥 Smoke and Scar is book 1 in the series and features a great take on magical trials that really held my attention because it felt so interactive. And Splintered Kingdom, book 2, takes place immediately after the chaos that unfolds. 🌶️ enemies to lovers 🔥 slow burn 🌿 found family vibes 💬 banter & nicknames 🧚🏼‍♀️ fae magic 🌈 LGBTQIA+ rep This indie fave has been picked up by @scarlettpress.us, an imprint of @simonandschuster! Book 1 rereleases on April 7, book 2 rereleases on August 26, and the third and final installment—Shadow and Son—will be available to everyone on October 20. P.S. Peep the last slide for my name in the acknowledgements for Splintered Kingdom! 💜 #bookreview #bookrecs #fantasybooks #romantasy #romantasybooks @gretchenwritesbooks
