Honoring Yasoi Kusama, who recently died at age 97 in Tokyo. She was famous for splashing her signature polka dots across the art world. Mary Luke, Susan Louie, Jackie Huey and Joyce Yu were fortunate to experience her famous yellow pumpkin and also the red polka dot pumpkin on Naoshima Island when we visited Japan in February 2025.

We never build wondrous things alone.

I’m feeling enormous gratitude for the community that has carried me on the journey that brought me to @artbasel Miami last week with “As her hands move, her heart beats in the rhythm of monsoons”.

When I look up at her, standing 12’ wide and over 14’ tall, I think of a banyan tree, a symbol of resilience, community and sustenance, which feels so fitting. I’m indebted to Mae Yai (Aunties + grandmothers) who taught me to weave a legacy of strength and ingenuity into my work in the hills of Chiang Mai, the aunties with familiar generous hands I commissioned to weave bamboo threshing baskets for the piece, my dear friend Feung who helped me get the baskets to NYC, my community of NYC AAPI aunties who came to the studio to tie knots with me and imbue the work with care and stories, the incredible team @powerhouse_arts who welcomed me into the shop and helped me build the piece, @nyanchatte for tying so many knots and sewing so many yo-yos with me, the wonderful humans at @artadia @bofaprivatebank @ritzcarltonsouthbeach who provided crucial support for this work to come to life, the crew in Miami who helped me install her over three midnight-7am shifts, @catherinegrau who kept me sane, and all of the kind collectors, curators, supporters and community members who came out to celebrate this collaboration, uplift matrilineal inheritance and art.

I’m so honored, humbled, and eye-wateringly grateful.

Congratulations to our 2024 grantee partners @rhymeswitheff and @ellen.martinez_ on the premier of @slumlordmillionairefilm at @docnycfest. "This documentary exposes housing injustice in NYC, following the David-and-Goliath battles between ordinary renters and powerful developers. Through stories from neighborhoods across the boroughs, the film reveals the harsh realities of unsafe housing, unethical landlords, and an overwhelmed housing court system. It also uncovers a troubling pattern of desirably located properties being seized for luxury developments in low-income neighborhoods, often with the system’s complicity. Slumlord Millionaire is both empowering and sobering, highlighting grassroots activism in the fight against relentless gentrification."

At the Hannah Traore Gallery with Hannah is Joyce Yu,@joycesamoa, Asian Women Giving Circle AWGC, talking about art and activism and the power of artivism to transform society and attitudes towards racism and sexism. Hannah uses her gallery as a platform to celebrate and give voice and space to artists marginalized by the mainstream art world. AWGC gives grants to AANHPI artists who use their art to advocate for racial and social justice. @awgcnyc, @hannahtraoregallery, @unwomen.
