Sonic Sermons: Performing Archives → Thu 1 Oct / 10 AM - 4 PM → More info and tickets via link in bio Joyce Treasure @joycetreasure is a multidisciplinary artist and independent researcher, whose practice includes performance, painting, video, photography, costume, writing, and installation. Joyce Treasure’s practice draws primarily from Black feminist thought, particularly Beverley Stoute’s theorisation of Black Rage, alongside an ongoing interest in Yoruba cosmology and Butoh. Her work proposes refusal as a reparative process, addressing impermanence, ancestral knowledge, and the generative potential of fragments. In many creative and collaborative spaces, there is an emphasis on joy as a condition of feminist resistance and survival. Her research sits in tension with this: she is interested in what gets foreclosed when joy becomes a requirement and grief, rage, and ambivalence are treated as problems to move through rather than as valid, generative modes in their own right. Horizontal Practices is a strand of LPS programming dedicated to peer-to-peer learning and non-hierarchical spaces for conversation. These take form as discursive events, professional training, and curated guest workshops. #HorizontalPractices

This month, Fresh Milk and Nieuw Instituut joined up for a week-long research trip to re-evaluate the design and impact of our joint Tilting Axis Fellowship. We spent time in Curaçao and Aruba for extensive engagement with the local arts and cultural sector, including site visits to schools, galleries, non-profits, ministries and the archives. We’re grateful to our co-collaborators who made possible our three public-facing programmes: the wonderful teams at Instituto Buena Bista (IBB), and Bloemhof Gallery together with Uniarte, and Farm to Craft in Curaçao; and in Aruba, the team at Residencia Artistico Aruba (RAA!). Thank you to the people who helped to deepen our insight into the local context and history: those at Curaçao Outdoor Industry Alliance research space; the National Archives of Curaçao, Archivo Nacional Aruba (ANA), Design Academy Aruba, and the Ministry of Culture of Aruba. @joycetreasure is a multidisciplinary artist and Independent Researcher highly motivated in the creative industry, delivering and installing shows as a director, project manager, artist, filmmaker, and workshop facilitator. Her work includes engaging with the public in groups and one-on-one settings. Drawing on diverse skills and research, she transcends the boundaries between art and research to create new hybrid work incorporating movement, performance, and new technologies to disseminate theory as a decolonial practice. Transforming assemblages of objects and images into allegories of experiences, she cuts between collage, sculpture, painting, drawings, performance, film, and speculative writing in her practice. An initiative by the @culturehealthwellbeingalliance and the @londonartsandhealth, #blackhistorymonth2025❤️🖤💚 spotlights have commissioned six artists across the UK to showcase their creative practices on the the themes of health, climate justice, and cultural empowerment. The joy of playing, lost in daydreams akin to a child, is an essential process I think towards fashion photography. It was beyond a pleasure to be included in a shoot that celebrated this, a palpable feeling on set, a reminder of the joy of creating outside of the virtual intensity and apathy fashion photography can radiate online. It was an enriching experience to befriend fellow artists where performance is an instrumental motif in our shared practices. Also a keen sense of mischief! Thank you Will @willwaterworth for including me into your fold, since the first time you did a few double takes on me while I was waiting for the bus, late of course, but in quite a look I assure you ;) For Joel and Edie @joelkerrfilms & @edieashley gorgeous friends with large visions to say and stronger hearts, capturing and dressing me always in the most streezy fashion.
