In 8th grade at DREW MIDDLE SCHOOL I was apart of a dance team and we performed to Busta Rhymes “PUT YA HANDS IN THE SKY FOR ME” in the school lunchroom rocking my red shirt and black pants ❤️🥰

My homegirl THE LEGENDARY Lauren Johnson was on the drums and WE SHUT DREW PANTHERS DOWN 👸🏾❤️🙏🏾🐈‍⬛

This day was REALLY SPECIAL because my father had just come HOME FROM PRISON and this was his first time seeing me “perform” at school.

I was SO EXCITED that my DAD WAS FINALLY FREE and HE WAS EXCITED TO SEE ME TOO 🤴🏾❤️🫂🥰🤗

When JDilla passed, it was not a question what we would name our youngest son a few years later in 2009. And when his name became public... a lot of people questioned my “right” to name my son such a name and if his family knew. JDilla’s family not only knew, MaDukes Yancey @madukesofficial (his mother), Uncle Herm Hayes @uncle_herm (his uncle) and Joylette Hunter (his daughter’s mother) @joylette_marie are his godparents and MaDukes and Uncle Herm were present for his naming ceremony. JDilla was my FRIEND. And while he wasn’t present to see his namesake be born and grow... his influence lives on in his godson- who took up the drum at an early age and is rapidly becoming a multi instrumentalist drummer just like him. I know JDilla is still rocking with us.
Happy Heavenly Bornday to the King of Beats, JDilla.

This video is six years old… Dilla is has grown musically and professionally- and physically.

This is the case and one of two CDs that Dilla gave me for his album ‘Donuts,’ which came out 20 years ago today, on his 32nd birthday. I was running Stones Throw Records at the time, and creatively involved in most projects at the label. This was one that we all knew was of extreme importance, and, for whatever reason, I’ll never really know I guess, Dilla told his mother Maureen I could be with him whenever I had time and he was up for it. Who would say no to that?

In early 2005, from his room at Cedars Sinai Hospital, Dilla gave me two copies of his master CD for what would become the ‘Donuts’ album. I think he gave me one so I could just reference it in my car – can you imagine hearing his vision for this album for the first time, and knowing you were the first one to hear it in full? If I was interviewing myself about this moment, I would doubt the tale. But that’s what happened.

I kept the CD I played, in the original plastic case on which Dilla scrawled “Dilla Dawg – Donuts.” Dilla’s original version of the album, as noted in Dan Charnas’ excellent book ‘Dilla Time,’ is quite different - shorter and in a different sequence - than the commercially issued version of the album.

It’s hard to recall that complicated, conflicted - often times joyous and often times sad –time. I can say that listening to ‘Donuts’ now, I’m like many, if not all, who have heard it – blown away at the nuance revealed in each listen. While I considered him a friend, first and foremost I knew that I worked with and for Dilla, and since his passing I have worked with and for his Estate – it’s one of the greatest honors I’ve had in music, to serve him, his genius and his indelible musical legacy, the fruits of which he passed on to his four heirs.
