【START!

16:00-16:30 Panel Talk: What is Swedish Design? Does a national design identity still matter? Location: @hosoisthlm speak easy Swedish design has a strong international reputation – but what does it actually mean today? Is there still a recognisable Swedish approach, or have the distinctions between national design identities become increasingly blurred? Bringing together two very different Swedish design practices, this conversation explores heritage, identity and international perception – asking how much designers are shaped by where they come from, whether “Swedishness” still carries value, and what could define Swedish design next. We’ll explore: what Swedish design means now, whether its identity is changing, and what could define its next chapter. * Is there such a thing as Swedish design today? * Which values or ways of working, if any, feel distinctly Swedish? * How much does Swedish design heritage influence contemporary designers? * Do Swedish designers see themselves differently from how the rest of the world sees them? * Is “Swedishness” an advantage when working with international brands and manufacturers? * Where does Swedish design sit within the broader idea of Scandinavian design? * And what could make Sweden relevant as a design nation in the future? Panelists: Johannes Karlström, Founding Partner and Head of the Spatial Department, Note Design Studio @johannes__karlstrom @notedesignstudio Fredrik Paulsen, Designer and Founder, JOY OBJECTS @fredrikpaulsen @joyobjects Moderator: Auste Skrupskyte Cullbrand, Strategist, Publisher and Founder of studio playground @a_uste @studio__play__ground

Silvery metals are considered cool, unlike warm burnished brass or bronze. Especially since stainless and aluminum are so linked to modern design, favoring a lot of industrial style in recent years. But a few brands have set out to disavow that notion. Whether it’s curvy form or embellishments, combination with other materials, some of the new designs are turning heads. And some classics, like the @petitefriture reissue of the 1928 Rene Herbst Sandows chair, bring new admirers. Here’s what we saw in Milan, Copenhagen and Chicago: * Close to the Heart by @spacon.studio sculptural chair designed for @muutodesign 20th anniversary with anodized aluminum by @shapesbyhydro , limited edition 150, features hearts at the ends of the extruded aluminum seat; also laser/cut hearts in the highly polished aluminum headboard created especially for the display at @other.circle * @basetale.studio at @alcova.milano . Beeswax finishes, embellishments in glass or steel bolts add an intentional soft touch to stainless steel. A light sconce was inspired by a childhood blanket with delicate flower stitching, recalled with lacing around the edges. * @emecochairs @neocon_shows . Navy lounge chair by Jasper Morrison brings back to life a design in the 1940s for the US Navy * @sackit_official Perforated pendant light at Frederikstsad 1 during @3daysofdesign * @studiochristinekalia repurposes deadstock and waste from aluminum windows * @mati.sipiora Steel Poodle chair with Dalmatian-patterned seat * Petite Friture reedition of Rene Herbst chair * @joyobjects Ali + Ghost “Soft steel;”Swedish brand calls itself “furniture for the jilted generation.” * @d_o_block Ode to the iconic Monobloc chair, reimagined in stainless steel, emphasizing the significance of the “simple object.” * @nm3.xyz Storage, kitchen cabinets with purposeful decoration and minimal knobs * @niko__june Bouquet Theory pairs aluminum base with chunky cast glass top with fragments from waste * @offsite______ chairs and objects from industrial waste. Chair crafted from 4mm aluminum plates that once shaped the airflow in indoor sports halls. #metal #aluminum #stainless #design #recycled
