Makadegwaasiik - Little Black Feather Woman

It’s a great day to celebrate Indigenous culture and to see our traditions carry on to the next generation as our little fierce pride and joy one-year-old received her Anishinaabe name today.

We chose to surround Winnie with some of the most influential people in her life to teach her, guide her, discipline her, and celebrate her in the most needed ways from here on out for the rest of their lives.

We set dishes for our Relatives, we celebrated what it means to be connected as a family, and we witnessed the birth and official right of passage into the Anishinaabe culture to our own Makadegwaasiik.

As Ojibwe people we believe that when our spirit travels on to the next place in time we leave behind our body and our spirit is recognized by our Anishinaabe name. It is imperative to us to have that name to carry with her in this life and the next. It will one day define who she will become and the kind of life she will lead forward.

We are so blessed to have these people, and many more in our lives, to share the role of helping this little baby to become a strong woman one day who will change the world.

What a beautiful day, in such a beautiful life.

Celebrating our first wedding anniversary the way it all started. Sushi for dinner (just like our first date), and wedding cake for dessert.

We are so thankful and still feeling all of the love from our family and friends on our special day a year ago. Thank you all for your love and support, from both of us.

Happy Anniversary @jpert13 🩷
