The stars are out for #Windblown 🤩

★★★★★ “Karine Polwart’s elegant mix of storytelling and song [is] a masterpiece. From the moment Pippa Murphy’s environmental soundscape rattles with the wind, this homecoming of sorts remains a monument to the power of the natural world and the glorious constructions that grow from it.” @theheraldscotland

In celebration of Cove Park’s 25th Anniversary, our fifth Spotlight on 25 is by multidisciplinary dance artist and choreographer Janice Parker.

‘I have a deep love and respect for Cove Park. My first encounter was in 2005 thanks to a Creative Scotland Award and a recommendation from the wonderful Roanne Dodds.

For me Cove Park is a space away from the world, where the edges are porous and time literally changes. There is nothing prescriptive or organised: it’s okay to drift and be soft at the edges, to live in dream time and liminal time, and equally to be driven to make and create. Artists are seen and held but with no expectation to perform, produce, or be visible. There is space and time for all, and choice in the ways residents can share space together. Cove Park is a place of chance encounters and unexpected conversations – so vital and enriching.

Across the course of my numerous Cove Park residencies, I’ve witnessed the changes, the flourishing, and the growth. I knew the old Artists Centre well, and now the new Jacobs Building; I have my favourite Cube, but have also stayed in the Pods, sharing space with fellow artists. I go for my own practice, on self-funded residencies, and at the invitation of other artists and organisations as part of their work, and I’ve contributed in different ways to Cove Park’s ever expanding engagement programme.

And the land speaks, with its mountainous vista and all the weathers that pass over it. I’ve moved with the trees, the fence posts, the swing bridge, the rocks and the stones, the steps, the tufted grasses, the wildflowers, the gravelled paths, the water, in all the weathers. These are the invitations of a place. To be in residence is to inhabit, settle, and linger for a while, so vital to my practice and development.

Happy 25th Birthday Cove Park, thanks for being there.’

June 2025: looking back over my pictures from the last half of 2025 has been pretty incredible. It all went past so quickly. A collection from June that don’t include our epic road trip ♥️ but do include some other fantastic locations. Feels odd now thinking about travelling around so much when I’ve hardly moved the last 3 months #dublin #glasgow #edinburgh #bute #memorylog

🔥 #Windblown is one of the ten best shows of @edfringe - #TheCrushBar with Fergus Morgan.

“Windblown only ran at the Fringe for a few nights, but it had a huge impact. Produced by @raw_material_arts and performed by celebrated Scottish singer-songwriter @karinepolwart, it used storytelling and song to tell the tale of The Old Sabal, a giant palm tree that stood in @rbgedinburgh for almost 200 years, until it was felled when the gardens’ glasshouses closed for redevelopment in 2021. It was a simple, stunning show, overflowing with a sense of grief, love, and what the writer Robert MacFarlane calls ‘deep time.’”

★★★★★ “Truly wonderful. An extraordinary, anthropomorphic, elegiac hour” @thestageuk

Fire on the Mountain, Light on the Hill ❤️‍🔥

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for the incredible live performance of Fire on the Mountain, Light on the Hill.

Beginning at Collective and unfolding across Calton Hill, the performance brought to life Mercedes Azpilicueta’s exhibition through movement with costumes and props that are on display in the installation. The exhibition is open until 7 September if you want a closer look at the textiles and objects, as well as the monumental tapestry at its centre.

Performance and choreography: Mercedes Azpilicueta (@mercedes.azpilicueta) in collaboration with Janice Parker (@janicemaryparker), with Carmen Berbel-Lapaz (@carm_ola) and Federica Cologna (@federica.cologna)
Costumes: made in collaboration with Anna Leoni Klass (@aneoni.klas)

Edinburgh! Sad to be leaving! Had a brilliant time at the Book festival. And strangely some of my best and oldest pals all happened to coincide their Edinburgh with mine! Magic! So proud of how this city opens its wide arms to the world every August! Not so proud of the crazy prices!
