While there is no perfect way to structure a training session, I often prefer to expose the players to different situations before isolating certain skills.

This framework allows me, as the coach, to see where each player or the group collectively may be struggling with different skills and which qualities are the limiting factor for their performance.

Within the live reps, players first have an opportunity to figure out different solutions on their own before I say anything. Which promotes higher quality learning if I don’t have to say anything at all.

But if they still are having difficulty, even after some small hints or suggestions, I can then prescribe more detailed on air reps for them to build upon or fine tune some weakness that may be present. And for the players, they now have context to why we’re working on certain skills or qualities because they were struggling with it against actual defense just a few minutes prior.

As a coach, I often hear other coaches say things like, “Kids need to play more pick up” or “They need to learn how to play.” I agree with that mindset. That’s why it’s important to create spaces in our workouts where players can become problem-solvers, think creatively, and feel free to express themselves.

I’ve seen a huge shift in players confidence on the court when the focus becomes less about controlling every move and more about giving them the freedom to learn, adapt, and break free from constraints.

Sometimes growth happens when we simply get out of the way. 🤝

DM the word “TRAINING” for more information.
