Kongunadu Cuisine

After the tremendous response I got for the Madurai Sourashtrian cuisine. I was completely lost as to what to do next and then @jshobhalalith suggested that I should do series on Kongunadu. Though it forms a major portion of Tamilnadu, the cuisine hasn’t got its due credit & recognition.

What is Kongunadu ?
The name Kongunadu draws its origin from term Kongu - meaning next or honey. It covers the area of Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur, Salem, Karur, Namakkal, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri & Nilgiris.
Kongunadu cuisine covers a large area and it’s extensive. Though the recipe is the same, taste differs from region to region.
Some of the delicacies include - Arisi paruppu sadam, Urulai kizhangu curry, paruppu urandai kolambu, Pachapuli rasam, Elaneer payasam. Meat based dishes make up for majority of the cuisine.

But real kongu food is still confined to home kitchens, which has been passed on from generations.

Talk about kongu food is incomplete without acknowledging the contribution of chef Jacob who did an extensive research on Kongu food & also opened couple of restaurants serving authentic kongu cuisine, But we lost him very early.

What makes Kongu food special is use of indigenous ingredients like Nannari, Turmeric, coconut, Horsegram & millets.
Kongu food doesn’t involve marination and fresh tumeric is used abundantly. Shallots and red chillis are primary ingredients. Being surrounded by hills, dairy products are widely used.

While doing my research I couldn’t find much information on the cuisine. And not do many people have good knowledge about what their ancestors ate. The cuisine has drastically changed in the last two decades, because people find the process of cooking these dishes cumbersome.
I have tried my best to being to some of the famous vegetarian dishes of this region, hope you enjoy this journey.
Do share your favourite dishes from these region that grew up eating. And also if there is special family recipe that you would like to share pls mention the the comment section below.
