My 768th Reel: RENT

The first birthday after a parent’s passing can be really daunting. I didn’t want to throw my typical huge birthday bash, so I decided to do something reflective. As I thought about what would be meaningful I reflected on turning 48 which is 2×24. That made me realize that I had spent exactly half of my life in New York City (since I moved here when I was 24). And then I thought about 24 hours in a day and 525,6000 minutes in a year.

So what better way to celebrate this birthday than Rent - which also celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, which is coincidentally the 30th anniversary of me graduating from high school.

I was able to recruit lots of friends to participate because many are performers and many are Filipino and many are Filipino performers.

We called our ancestors into the room. We sang. We danced. We healed.

Thank you to my chosen family for reminding me that there’s no day but today.

To being an “us” for once, instead of a “them”.

My 696th Reel: Filipinotown Magazine

Thank you to @filipinotown.magazine for the package they sent this week. It contained all of the issues of their amazing magazine, with their Pride issue (June 2025) right on top. I’d obviously seen the photos and even loved what I saw on their website, but to see the print version made my heart smile. (You can hopefully see the visceral joy on my face and emanating throughout my entire body in the video).

Thank you to Filipinotown, to @aleksamanila for connecting us, to @terrencejeffreysantos for the phenomenal photos, to @chylaguerrero for making me my most marvelous, to @jslashnoel for styling me, and to @isabellaliana for being the best handler and team player.

From the photo shoot to receiving the print issue, what made this whole experience so worth it for me was the fact that the issue might help even one young trans or queer Filipinx kid feel a little less alone and a little more validated in the world.

In fact, if you would’ve told a young closeted Kevin that he’d be featured in a Pride issue of a Filipino American magazine, he wouldn’t have believed you. He would’ve benefitted so much from a magazine issue like this. And in many ways, he’s a little bit more healed because of this whole experience.

My 673rd Reel: Chuck and Chrispy

It was a true honor being able to officiate Charles and Stephanie’s wedding. I’ve known them together for the entirety of their relationship, and I’ve loved being able to witness them grow into the both the individual adults and the solid couple they’ve become.

Perhaps it was appropriate that they got married during #FilipinoAmericanHistoryMonth because their wedding is one that will go down in history. The vibes, the aesthetic, the food, the music, the dancing, and the ceremony were all 10s across the board. The love and joy in the room was truly palpable and infectious.

So congratulations again to one of my favorite couples in the world. May you continue to love each other, take care of each other, fight for your love and marriage, and make each other belly laugh/cackle for eternity.

Dear New Yorkers,

In case you’re still undecided, here is my case for voting Zohran Mamdani for mayor — ranking him as my #1 choice in the democratic primaries — and why you should too!

I have not been this excited about *any* candidate in at least 17 years. From fighting for a free CUNY and fare-free public transit, to co-sponsoring BDS legislation and showing up for LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities, Zohran doesn’t just talk the talk — he organizes, legislates, shows up in historically marginalized communities, and wins.

He’s my clear #1 - the one who aligns with all of my values as a queer/ brown Asian/ Filipino American/ child of immigrants/ parent/ CUNY professor who believes in human beings’ fundamental right to exist peacefully in the world.

My other ranked candidates support CUNY, housing justice, health equity, education, queer/trans rights, and BDS - while excluding those who prioritize interests of the corrupt federal government, ICE, NYPD, or corporations. These are the values that matter most to me, and I have faith that these are these values matter to other New Yorkers too.

Ranked-choice voting means you can vote your values all the way down the list. But please don’t rank anyone who could UNDO the progress we’ve been fighting for. As New Yorkers, we have the opportunity to NOT elect someone with prior histories of sexual assault/harassment, lying, misappropriation of funds, or other criminal/sketchy activities. Wouldn’t it be nice to NOT have to explain to your kids how a sexual predator got elected?

Let’s get free, NYC.

I believe in us.

Please remind all your friends to vote too!
