When a new athletic facility was completed at the 400-acre Berkshire School the old hockey rink was torn down, leaving behind an empty site and a stark blank wall at the Rovensky Student Center. The newly available real estate was an opportunity to rejuvenate the center and existing spaces for the boarding school’s expanding music program.

A new addition significantly increases the amount of space to reorganize existing facilities and add new ones. These include the dining hall, student gathering spaces, private dining areas, a music center, Student Life offices, a mailroom, and a bookstore. By creating a large opening from the dining level to the ground floor with a grand connecting staircase, snack bar seating and the dining room seating can combine to handle the peak requirement—a total of 520 occupants—instead of opting for a large area that feels sparse at low occupancy.

Thanks @jeffreytotaro for these photographs of the completed project

We're pleased to announce that the Alan Horwitz "Sixth Man" Center for Philadelphia Youth basketball has been awarded a Public Impact Award from Preservation Pennsylvania. We worked to transform a previously inaccessible industrial complex in North Philadelphia’s Nicetown neighborhood into a safe, welcoming destination for young people and the broader community. Six interconnected warehouse buildings dating from the early 20th century were adapted to accommodate basketball courts, classrooms, offices, meeting areas, and civic-engagement programs while retaining exposed brick, steel columns, roof trusses, gantries, and other evidence of the site’s industrial past. Congratulations to Partner in Charge Daniela Voith and team members Andrew Lipschutz and Alison Kass for this successful collaboration.

VMA recently completed the renovation of Cresson Hall at Lincoln University. The renewed building accommodates both residential life on the upper floors and a new academic program on the first floor housing the Center for Public History, which includes offices for research fellows, flexible workspace, and a multipurpose gallery and presentation room designed for lectures, exhibitions, and public events. Bringing a historic building new life, while accommodating modern day programming needs is essential to the success of each project from our preservation team led by John H. Cluver, FAIA, LEED AP, CPHC

After years of unsightly alterations, we worked closely with Lincoln University, using historic drawings and prints as precedent to restore the entry tower at Cresson Hall. The tower now stands, once again, in its original splendor, allowing for an entry into the renovated dorm rooms at the upper levels while providing research offices and gathering space at the first floor.
