Last day of FONTANELLE! 💚

Today is your last chance to step inside Jess Stapf’s Fontanelle at One Mile. We’re open 12–5 PM.

One of the things we’ve loved about living with this installation is getting up close to Stapf’s extraordinary surfaces. She uses felted wool to build and transform sculptural forms, working the fibers into dense, tactile skins. It’s a wonderfully labor-intensive process (we watched it happen in real time yesterday!) and the evidence of the hand is everywhere—soft, fuzzy, irregular and very much alive.

Throughout Fontanelle, familiar domestic forms become strange little landscapes of saturated greens and blues, flowers, pattern and texture.

And a special bonus: Mark Hogancamp holding court in our “Mini Marwencol,” sharing stories and bringing a little Marwencol magic to the day.

We’re back tomorrow, Sunday, 12–5 PM. Come hang with us and step inside Fontanelle!

Opening today at noon. 💚

A glimpse inside FONTANELLE, Jess Stapf’s wonderfully immersive installation at One Mile.

The gallery has been completely transformed—sculpture, furniture, painting, color and texture coming together to create an environment that feels part interior, part landscape, part imagined world. There’s something wonderfully uncanny about it: familiar forms become strange, playful and almost bodily, and the boundaries between artwork and the space around it begin to disappear.

Installation is nearly complete for FONTANELLE, Jess Stapf’s exhibition at One Mile, and the gallery has become an entirely different place.

After the urgency and political charge of A Complicated Union, we’ve loved watching the space shift so completely. Fontanelle creates its own immersive world that is part domestic interior, part landscape, part dream.

Stapf’s sculptural furniture seems at once familiar and wonderfully strange: lush greens, flowers, painted surfaces and unexpected textures transform everyday forms into something almost bodily.

This is one of the things we love most about installation: when an artist doesn’t simply put work in a gallery, but changes our experience of the gallery itself. With Fontanelle, you don’t quite feel like you’re looking at an exhibition. More like a different world.

And we’re very happy to be living in it for the weekend. 💚

MEET THE ARTIST: JESS STAPF

This weekend, One Mile Gallery welcomes Hudson Valley artist Jess Stapf for a special two-day presentation of Fontanelle, fresh from its recent exhibition at Saratoga Arts.

Stapf works across sculpture, installation, and drawing, creating immersive environments that explore the body, memory, transformation, and our relationship to the spaces we inhabit. Drawing on organic forms, architecture, and lived experience, her work often occupies a fascinating territory between the bodily and the built, the intimate and the expansive.

At the center of Stapf’s practice is an interest in vulnerability—not simply as fragility, but as a state of openness and possibility. Her installations ask us to consider the boundaries between our bodies and our surroundings, and the ways memory and experience become embedded in both.

The title Fontanelle refers to the soft, membranous spaces between the bones of an infant’s skull—openings that allow the skull to flex, expand, and accommodate growth. It’s an evocative starting point for Stapf’s exploration of permeability and transformation.

August at One Mile Gallery begins with one last chance to experience A Complicated Union: Art & Protest at America’s 250th Anniversary. Join us this Saturday, August 8, from 12–5 PM for the final day of an exhibition bringing together more than 30 artists whose work explores history, identity, protest, and the evolving American experience as we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary. Thank you to everyone who has visited, participated in conversations, and supported the artists throughout the exhibition’s run.

The following weekend, August 15–16, we welcome Jess Stapf: Fontanelle for a special two-day pop-up. Fresh from its presentation at Saratoga Arts, Fontanelle is an immersive installation by Hudson Valley artist Jess Stapf. Working across sculpture, installation, and drawing, Stapf creates environments that examine the body as a site of memory, transformation, and connection. Drawing from organic forms, architecture, and lived experience, Fontanelle invites viewers into a contemplative space exploring vulnerability, resilience, and the porous boundaries between self and environment.

Then, for one weekend only, August 22–23, Jo Cunningham’s The Freak Family Roadshow rolls into One Mile Gallery. Inside a beautifully restored vintage 1950s canned-ham trailer lives an unforgettable family: a gorilla mother, an alien father, and their wonderfully odd hybrid child. What first appears to be a roadside curiosity reveals itself as a moving meditation on family, belonging, and the ways we define who is “normal.” Recently featured by CBS Bay Area, Cunningham’s acclaimed traveling installation draws inspiration from roadside attractions, outsider art, and personal history to create an experience that is equal parts spectacle, humor, and compassion.

We hope you’ll spend August with us.
