Everything comes full circle sometimes.

There’s something special about playing with musicians you’ve known and made music with for 20+ years. After that much time, there’s a musical language that develops that’s hard to explain. You listen differently. You anticipate differently. Everybody knows when to step forward and when to leave space.

I’m proud of everybody from the Day One IE squad. Watching everyone grow over the years and go on to build successful careers as musicians has been a beautiful thing.

This clip is some of us coming back together and playing at church, and it reminded me that certain chemistry never leaves. Different experiences, different journeys, years of growth , but once the music starts, it feels familiar.

No forcing it. No overthinking it. Just listening, reacting, and trusting each other.

20+ years later, and the conversation is still there.

Some musical chemistry is built over time. 🎶

Rehearsing this weekend for Morongo Casino. 🎸

One thing about playing cover songs, you never really know the song until you know the song. We can hear these records our whole lives, but it’s not until you sit down, break them apart, and dissect what’s really happening that you understand what makes them work.

Here’s a clip of us rehearsing “Ain’t Nobody” by Chaka Khan. I’m recreating that synth bass sound on the MXR Bass Synth, while using a Nino mute at the bridge to help those staccato notes speak cleaner, tighter, and faster.

Contrary to popular belief, playing cover songs won’t dumb you down as a musician. If anything, studying great records expands your musical vocabulary and gives you a deeper understanding of feel, sound, arrangement, and why certain musical choices work.

Sometimes the best way to develop your own voice is to really understand the language that came before you. 🎶

Pulled out my Bass Mods 535 loaded with Nordstrand Split-Coil Noiseless pickups for this one. Passive bass, but don’t get it twisted… this thing BARKS like a dog. 🐕🔥

Always a great time playing with this crew. Here we’re digging into “Glory, Glory Glory” performed by City of Refuge & Noel Jones.

One thing I’ve really noticed since playing more gospel is how much my slap chops are developing. The vocabulary, articulation, pocket, dynamics—and knowing when to really dig in—are starting to feel more natural every time I play.

Still learning. Still sharpening. Still adding tools to the toolbox. 🎸🔥

Some songs aren’t about playing more—they’re about making every note count.

Here’s a little groove from “Ascension” by Maxwell with Jason Stuart on drums and Darryl Beamon on keys. When everyone is listening, the pocket gets deeper.

A few people have asked about the sound, so here’s the setup: this was recorded with a Roland GO:MIXER, straight from my pedalboard via XLR—no app, just the live mix. Since this is at Pala Casino, Jason is playing an electronic drum kit, as acoustic drums aren’t permitted in the room.

I’m playing my Lakland Joe Osborn 5-string strung with Jim Dunlop Super Bright Nickel Wound strings. A straightforward rig, great musicians, and a groove that’s all about feel.
