We thank the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir for bringing us along for a journey to fill in the gaps of what was left unsaid in the work created by one of our greatest classical composers, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Specifically focusing on two of his most monumental, unfinished masterpieces, the Great Mass in C Minor and the Requiem, Maestro Jean-Sébastien Vallée led the choir as they breathed new life into these pieces that so many of us know and love 🎵

Thank you Toronto and to the wonderful singing of @tmchoir 💜💜💜

I so enjoyed our two performances of Mozart’s Mass in C minor and the North American premiere of @phdutron new version of the Requiem last week, led by Maestro @jsvallee and a great team of soloists: @lindsaymcintyremusic @krisztinaszabomezzo @ahalhalliday @colinainsworth_tenor

"Opening the proceedings was the Great Mass. From the first down beat of the Kyrie eleison onwards, I was swept up by the powerful choral sound. This section has a lengthy solo for soprano, taken by Claire de Sévigné. Possessing a beautiful coloratura, de Sévigné is enjoying a fine international career, and it’s good to hear her once again in Toronto. Here she sang with purity and beauty of tone in the Kyrie, deftly navigating the demanding vocal line spanning nearly two octaves. Her top voice was also impressive in Et incarnatus est."
-La Scena Musicale

"Soprano Claire de Sévigné had operatic feats to perform, particularly in the Great Mass in C Minor (heard in the Frieder Bernius & Uwe Wolf edition).... the Et incarnatus est, with its rich woodwind accompaniment, was a thing of beauty."

Our 2026/27 season opened with Mozart’s Mass in C Minor and Requiem, featuring premieres of Matthew Emery’s Agnus Dei: Truth Uphold and Guide Me, and Pierre-Henri Dutron’s reconstructed version of the Requiem.

Across two remarkable evenings at Koerner Hall, music from the past met music of the present and the result was something truly extraordinary.

Thank you for being there with us.

Two fantastic concerts of Mozart’s Mass in C minor and Requiem, with the North American premiere of Pierre-Henri Dutron’s new version, sung by the incredible forces of the Mendelssohn Choir, led by the fantastic Jean-Sébastien Vallée, and such a great team of soloists: Claire de Sévigné, Lindsay McIntyre, Krisztina Szabó, and Alex Halliday!

The Edward’s Studio was also well represented by his alumni! 👏🏻

The Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO, @bostonsymphony) announces the appointment of Jean-Sébastien Vallée as the BSO Director of Choruses and Conductor of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus (TFC, @tanglewoodmusicfestival) with the start of the 2026-27 season.

Vallée becomes the all-volunteer group’s third director since its founding in 1970.

Vallée, who served as one of several guest choral directors in 2025-26, was at Tanglewood on the final weekend of the BSO’s summer season to lead the TFC in a Prelude concert in Ozawa Hall featuring Martín Palmeri’s Misa a Buenos Aires and in two BSO performances in the Shed that offered Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Brahms’s “Selig sind, die da Leid tragen” from Ein deutsches Requiem, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. He also directed the TFC’s performances with the BSO in the same Beethoven and Bernstein works at Symphony Hall last spring.

He looks forward to upcoming programs in the 2026-27 season, including Haydn’s The Creation, the world premiere of Golijov’s Creation, the BSO’s concert-opera performance of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, among others.

On Sunday (8/23), the Tanglewood grounds came alive with the sounds of "Ode to Joy," conducted by Gustavo Gimeno, signifying the final BSO concert of the summer. Alongside this Tanglewood tradition, Jean-Sébastien Vallée led the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and pianists Julia Carey and DJ Cleavinger in Brahms' sonorous “Selig sind, die da Leid tragen” from Ein deutsches Requiem.
