We’re sad to say goodbye to past presidents Kelsie and Taylor, as well as our other 3rd year officers as we send them off into 4th year. However, we are excited to welcome Jess and Elizabeth as the current FARM Club presidents! With our palpation lab wrapped up last week, we are looking forward to plan more fun opportunities for the club in the coming year!!

Day 9 - Grassington in West Yorkshire and the main shooting sites for the current ACGS series on PBS!
Peter took us to the quaintest little market town yet - Grassington. It stands in for Darrowby in the new series and it is wonderful! The Devonshire Pub (The Drovers Arms filming site in the new series) had the fire going, and Robert Bunney’s Mens and Ladies Wear ended up selling us scarves for the ladies and yet another tweed jacket for me!🤣
Then it was up the River Wharfe to the shooting site for Heston Grange in the new series, then Hawes and the Wensleydale Cheese factory for a yummy lunch, then up 2000 feet elevation to the Buttertubs, a limestone formation carved out by millennia of rainwater erosion (86 inches per year up there), so called because wagons transporting butter in the Middle Ages would leave the unsold butter hanging down 200 feet at the bottom of the formation to keep the butter cool.
Then back to Curlew Barn (our rooms are pictured), and dinner at the Golden Lion in Leyburn. Great day!

Day 8 - Watersplash! When Jess was 4 years old we watched the original 1978 All Creatures series on DVD together, and he loved the opening credits with James and Siegfried bombing around The Dales in the old Rover, especially the scene where the road runs right through a beck (creek). Well we finally did it ourselves today! On a little one lane road between two tiny villages in Swaledale we found Watersplash. The road at the creek crossing is laid with paver bricks to prevent erosion, and it has worked like a charm for decades. Bucket list item checked off for sure!

Day 7 - Herriot Country!
(Tuesday Jan 3) We were back on the train headed north to the place I’ve wanted to visit for over 40 years - the Yorkshire Dales, where Alf Wight lived and practiced from 1940-1995, and wrote the James Herriot books that inspired millions to join the veterinary profession. The original surgery at Kirkgate (Skeldale in the books) in Thirsk is a museum, preserved as it was in the 1940s. We toured the old rooms where Alf and his partner Donald Sinclair (Siegfried Farnon in the books) performed countless exams and surgeries, and retired by the little fireplace at the end of the day to warm and up and enjoy a whisky or two. The veterinary museum was full of equipment I use on my truck every day! We managed a photo opportunity at the old front door in the Yorkshire darkness sporting our MSVS caps!
We are staying at Curlew Barn (last photo) in Bellerby with Herriot Country Tours. They are B&B owners and sheep and cattle farmers, so we had a lot to talk about! Dinner at the Bolton Arms pub was straight out of the All Creatures series, complete with an excellent lamb shank, good Yorkshire bitter (Claudia and Jen went for gin fizzes), and a nice warm fire. Off to tour The Dales today - can’t wait!

Day 6 part 2 - Churchill again! We asked the concierge at The Savoy to show us the Pinafore Room, the venue for The Other Club, Churchill’s supper and drinking club founded in 1911. The club met twice monthly until well beyond his passing in 1965. It was a small wood paneled room, unchanged for the past 111 years, and one could just barely still pick up the lingering aromas of cigar smoke and brandy. Victory!

Day 6 part 1 - Harrod’s and The Savoy. We stopped by the world-famous Harrod’s dept store to inspect their Wagyu beef selection (it’s not quite Snake River Farms, but it looked good!), and the Moet and Chandon champagne bar. Then it was up The Strand to the Savoy for high tea, a brief (hotel produced) snow flurry, then an evening walk across Waterloo Bridge. Getting a lot of use out of my one dress suit!

Day 5 - Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park, London. The ice skating was a little slushy, but the Ice Bar was frozen solid! We definitely need an Ice Bar at the Dixon May Fair this year!

Happy New Year! We spent last night at a wonderful supper at The Petersham Hotel, just a half mile up the Thames River from Richmond. We toasted the new year with Pol Roger champagne (Winston Churchill’s favorite!), dined on beetroot tartare and beef filet, and finished the night out with Boris Johnson’s twin on the patio watching fireworks.

Day 3 part 2 - Anfield! Last night it was Liverpool FC V Leicester City FC at the legendary Anfield Stadium and thanks to Jen’s surprise Christmas present of 3 tickets we were there! For anyone who has attended a Giants or Kings game lately - 3 beers and 3 pies came to $20!! Liverpool prevailed 2-1, and we found a suitably beat up old pub near the ground for a celebratory pint. This morning we are back at Liverpool’s beautiful Lime St. Station and the return train to London for New Years Eve!

Day 3 - Liverpool! First stop was The Cavern Restaurant for a pint and a pie, then way down below street level to The Cavern Club, where the Beatles played their first gigs. Then out to the pier for a proper California-style western sunset over the Mersey River.

Day 2 - the Churchill Tour! Started out with Jess and Claudia at Westminster, then they were off to Buckingham Palace and I popped into the Westminster Arms for a quick pint. Refreshed, down into the underground Churchill War Rooms beneath Whitehall. The War Cabinet room pictured is very small, with maps on all the walls. Churchill’s 3 heads of the army, navy, and RAF sat 3 feet away in front of him and the War Cabinet for countless hours for 5 years - agreeing on some matters, pounding the table on others.
We all met up at 4pm (I was of course at a dead sprint to get there after spending too much time in the museum shop!) and clambered up to the second deck of an open top bus, and went on an evening lights tour of central London. Beautiful!
We are off to Liverpool by train tomorrow to see the Cavern Club (where the Beatles first played), then Anfield - Liverpool FC vs Leicester City 8pm! Cheers!
