Just back from an awesome trip to Garden of the Queen, Cuba! The Avalon team of dive guides, captains and crew worked tirelessly to ensure we had the best experience possible. And for all who joined Kevin and I thank you all for being a part of this exceptional experience very few get to do!
On almost every dive, we were accompanied by a host of Caribbean reef sharks, occasional Silkie sharks, Nassau grouper ( close to spawning), Tiger groupers, Black groupers, Yellowfin groupers several Goliath grouper – but one particularly super friendly Goliath named “Lola”! The schooling reef fishes were plentiful, many beautiful tropical species you do not see often, like almost every Hamlet (Indigo, Butter, Barred, Shy, Black and Golden), 4 species of Basslet or Gramma ( Fairy, Golden, Hybrid ad Black Cap), Queen Triggerfish, Angelfish, Rock beauties, Parrotfishes… and so many more! The soft and hard corals abound. Despite a N wind from a cold front, they were able to shuttle us to sites with great viz. So many photo opportunities and never enough time!!! My beloved father passed away June 14th, just a few days before his 86th birthday.
He was brilliant, generous, loving and the funniest man I’ve known.
Here are some of the rules he lived by:
-Never put yourself first.
-Value character over pedigree.
-Be impeccable with your word and speak your truth.
-Don’t be a KNOW IT ALL and blow sunshine up your skirt!
-Listen! You might learn something.
-Think twice before getting a tattoo.
-Exercise your brain.
-Read great literature.
-A good cuss word well-spoken and perfectly timed beats a timid,
polite response EVERY TIME!
-Be playful, witty, goofy, rambunctious.
-Laugh a lot.
-Say a prayer of thanks before every meal.
-Give quietly and generously.
-Enjoy the smell of the desert after it rains.
-Family is the best and our dogs are family too.
-Be abundant with your kisses.
-Keep family close.
-Be devoted to the ones you love.
There’s a whole world that doesn’t exist for us anymore now that he is gone.
And we are all missing him deeply,
but I find solace in knowing that
a bright star now lights up the night sky!

Last week this time we were dancing with the angels of the sea. With a wingspan of 23+ feet, the oceanic mata ray is an endangered marine animal. There are two types; the chevron and the black, both being the largest ray in the ocean.

Being in the water with them is like being with an old soul, their eyes tell a story. They can feel your energy and you can feel theirs, the connection is real. They are truly gentle giants. Socorro and the Revillagigedo Islands hold a secret of the oceans and one can only experience it if they are adventurous enough to make the 26+ hour journey to get there. An unforgettable experience to say the least.
