POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Juddbaal is a fictional museum of paintings, all unearthed by its curator at the flea market of the Place du Jeu de Balle in Brussels. A way of giving a second life to forgotten works — or simply set aside for being too singular — and of sharing the magnetic pull they exerted on their new owner.

Here are the ones that have this power over me…

juddbaal spring deaccession sale
May 11 & 18, 2025 — 11:00 16:00
7 Rue du Chevreuil, 1000 Brussels

Juddbaal is organizing a special deaccession event to support the future of its collection.
To fund the acquisition of new and significant artworks, the museum will be carefully deaccessioning a selection of pieces from it’s existing archive.

This event offers collectors a unique opportunity to acquire remarkable works, while directly contributing to the growth and enrichment of the collection.

See you on these Sundays ☀️

Since arriving in Brussels 10 years ago, I started collecting paintings from the flea market located at Place du Jeu de Balle. Today, more than 50 pieces are part of the collection, now gathered under the name of their new museum, "Juddbaal."

At the end of last May, we organized the first exhibition of the Juddbaal project at Jette400. With the team, we selected 20 paintings to develop a scenography suited to the space. Our goal was to showcase the paintings not only as works of art but also as objects. By suspending them, we revealed the uniqueness of each piece, its marks of time, and thus projected stories and initiated small investigations about them.

During the opening, dj Deschamps played lost tapes found on the flea market, in a scenography made of metal and plexiglass created by Fabien Silvestre Suzor.

There are still more than 30 paintings in the collection waiting to be shown but also art and craft objects.

The exhibition text written by Gilles Ribero below:

The objects presented in this exhibition were discovered in the Brussels’ flea market at Place du Jeu de Balle. They consist of paintings of various origins, subjects, and formats, all of which share the common trait of having touched their purchaser. Over the years, faced with the persistence of their gaze upon him, the latter decides to endow this collection of fortune with a fictive museum, without fixed walls, to perpetuate and share their unique power of attraction.

The appellation, Juddbaal, a playful deformation of the name of the famous square, resonates like a distant evocation of the place of their discovery, as if it referred to this place not from the world as we know it, but from a parallel world where these paintings would finally be celebrated. This text discusses their first public presentation, in a scenography that highlights both the virtual aspect of such a museum and what the objects reveal through their painting itself, their materials, their framing, or even the marks that time has left on them.
