THE FRONT SIDE DOESN’T NEED TO PULL OPEN TO CREATE ROTATION.

One of the most overlooked aspects of an efficient baseball swing is understanding how the front-side braking system influences rotation, stability & energy transfer.

Watch how Shohei Ohtani & Corey Seager organize their bodies as they transition from forward movement into rotation.

Both provide great examples of how the front side can help redirect momentum rather than simply pulling open.

Here’s what I want hitters to understand…

1. LANDING TURNED IN

As the front foot lands, the front hip, knee & shoulder maintain an organized relationship.

The goal isn’t to keep all three perfectly stacked throughout the swing. It’s to maintain control long enough to establish a stable lead side before rotating.

2. BRAKING BEFORE CLEARING

The front leg helps decelerate forward momentum while providing support for the pelvis to rotate.

The front side isn’t simply stopping everything. It’s helping redirect energy from forward movement into rotational acceleration.

3. THE FRONT HIP NATURALLY CLEARS

As the lead leg stabilizes & the backside continues rotating through, the front hip can begin moving backward.

The front hip moving backward is often a RESULT of effective braking & rotation —not necessarily something the hitter needs to force.

4. SEPARATION CREATES OPPORTUNITY

The pelvis begins rotating while the upper body remains relatively closed.

This allows the hitter to create separation, sequence the swing & deliver the barrel without prematurely pulling the front shoulder away from the baseball.

5. STABILITY DOESN’T MEAN STIFFNESS

We aren’t trying to lock the front knee, freeze the hips or prevent rotation.

We’re developing the ability to accept force, control momentum & rotate efficiently around a stable lead side.

HERE’S THE BIGGEST TAKEAWAY…

There’s a difference between:

Pulling the front hip + shoulder open to CREATE rotation.

Establishing an effective braking mechanism that ALLOWS the front side to clear as the body rotates.

The front side doesn’t need to race out of the way. It needs to provide a stable foundation for the rest of the body to rotate through.
