✨ Thank You All for an incredible AWOL Studios Open Day! ✨

What a day! We’ve just about recovered from one of our most successful Open Days yet, and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along, explored the studios, met our artists and supported our creative community.

Every visit, conversation and purchase makes a difference. Supporting your local creatives means so much, and we’re incredibly grateful to everyone who continues to support the artists and independent creative spaces that make Manchester special.

A massive thank you to our wonderful residents for opening their studios and sharing their work with you all. Thank you to David French, our director, for everything he does to support AWOL and our neighbours @commecaart for opening their beautiful gallery doors 💘
Plus amazing @ed_wrapscallion for keeping everyone fed with those delicious burritos! 🌯

A special thank you to Alex @crookedcartoon for another brilliant Open Day poster, and to @totem_wolf_mcr and @sidcooper_art for organising our awesome residents’ afterparty! 🥂🕺🪩

And, of course, thank you to everyone who came along and made the day what it was. We couldn’t do it without you!

Until next time… 💫

Manchester is FULL of creative talent 🎨✨

From independent artists to creative collectives, AWOL Studios’ open day was a brilliant reminder of how much amazing art is being made right here in the city. And catching up with @judewainwright_ whilst having a look inside Judetopia was a great addition!

If you’re looking for things to do in Manchester, put supporting local artists on your list. You never know what you might discover when you step into someone else’s creative world. ❤️

Don’t forget to give @awolstudiosmcr a follow for event news!

On until 25th October at @rogueartists_studios!

I love seeing exhibitions that are put on at artist studios as you get a feel of the space where the artists actually create and it’s so special.

Another fantastic show by @rogue_women 💛

Go see it?

I’m delighted to have been selected for the Whitaker Open! 🎨✨

The exhibition brings together a fantastic mix of emerging and established artists from across the North West, working across a diverse range of mediums.

A big thank you to the judges, Jude Wainwright, Zara Saghir, Jamie Holman and Gaynor Seville, for selecting my portrait “Stereo (diptych)” for the show. 🙏

The exhibition opens next Saturday, 17th October, and runs until 13th December 2026 at The Whitaker Museum & Art Gallery, Rawtenstall, BB4 6RE.

✨ AWOL RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT ✨

Jude Wainwright - Studio 405

Catch @judewainwright_ in and discover her work at our Open Day on Saturday 10th October, 1–7pm 👋

Jude Wainwright MAFA - is a figurative and surrealist painter whose work explores identity, emotion and storytelling through staged, symbolic self-portraits. Drawing on theatrical gesture, costume and surreal settings, her paintings blur the line between the real and the imagined, exploring how we construct, perform and conceal the self.

Alongside her own practice, Jude is the Studio Manager at AWOL Studios, where she supports our community of artists and leads on open studios, developing exhibitions, opportunities and collaborations for AWOL artists across the city. She is also co-founder of the annual @commecaart x AWOL Studios Open Call and helps coordinate AWOL’s presence at The @mcrcontemporary ✨

In 2022, Jude reached the semi-finals of Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year @artistoftheyear , before returning to @skyarts in 2025 as a guest presenter for two Portrait Artist Masterclass episodes focusing on narrative portraiture.

Jude is a Member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Artists (@mafaartists ) and her work has been exhibited widely across the UK and internationally, including her recent solo exhibition, Spectacle, at The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery @whitakermuseum

🎪 ROLL UP! ROLL UP! - A Spectacle Retrospective with James McColl ✨

As ⭐️Spectacle⭐️ comes to a close, I’d love to share this writing by the brilliant and oh so perceptive James McColl, in which we look back at the process of making the show, and everything that happened along the way 🪄

We talk about the circus, funding, grief, working with The @whitakermuseum collection, recurring characters, the Moon, collaboration, burnout, and the realities of getting a solo exhibition over the finish line 🤡

James and I first properly worked together on my solo show FACE-OFF at @saan1mcr in 2024. It felt important to come back together for ‘Spectacle’ and create a written record of the show from the inside, with a particular focus on the hurdles artists face in getting to the finish line of a solo exhibition.

The writing brings together conversations we’ve had in gallery cafés, at The Judio, and around the kitchen table while we stuffed preview night goodie bags!

I love working with James. Having him as a critical friend throughout this process has been a real blessing. He has a brilliant ability to ask the right questions and draw out how I’m actually feeling. It’s so important to have those moments to stop, check in and properly think about what you’re doing 💘
