Everyone knows that Instagram is stupid and it feels demeaning as an artist to post on it. But at the same time, if something happened and it didn’t get shared on Instagram, then it didn’t really happen. So here I am, posting: I’m grateful for the show we had in March and all the amazing artists that participated. I’m thinking a lot about space and how we ended up in a world where artists have to pay just to show work. Those stakes mean that people are less likely to experiment and less likely to come up with original and long lasting ideas, opting instead for short term concepts that are safe and more likely to sell. The art world in general ends up being unoriginal, uninspired, and repetitive in order to remain easily consumable. The commodification of space also means that communities are based around money and how sellable something is. I remember when I first moved to NYC in 2016 everyone was still broke and space was still hard to come by, so when we had it we’d go all out knowing that it could be gone the next day. Community was built around ephemeral spaces, meaning that all the weight of community relied on us, the people, not just on hoping that one random venue stayed open long enough for you and your friends to book a show. I know things are different now and I don’t mean to be nostalgic. But this feels like something people have forgotten - where there isn’t a venue, make one. Where there isn’t a space, take one. And ultimately your community relies on the respect you have for one another, not just on where you’re gonna book the next gig. That being said, we have another show at the end of the month. And I suppose I will be posting about it, although I’m excited about a future where I don’t have to share on a platform built to surveil and sell to us anymore. Love you all as always ❤️ bye
