Wishing a happy birthday to @Judith_Bernstein, born on this day in Newark, New Jersey!

Judith Bernstein has developed a reputation as one of the most unwaveringly provocative artists of her generation. For nearly 60 years, her work has explored connections between the political and the sexual. Steadfast in her cultural, political, and social critique, Bernstein surged into art world prominence in the early 1970s with her monumental anti-war and feminist charcoal drawings of anthropomorphic screws. She has lived and worked in New York since receiving her MFA from Yale in 1967.

Opening in 2027, Bernstein will be the subject of a major retrospective at Kunsthaus Zurich. To learn more about the artist, contact the gallery.

An interview with Judith Bernstein @judith_bernstein by Olivier Zahm @ozpurple from Purple #46 The Peace Issue

The American artist who emerged in the ’60s is more relevant than ever. Her punchy, direct paintings and drawings tell the truth, fight for the truth, and inspire change.

PUBLIC FEARS
The paintings draw on the same gestural movements of Bernstein’s earlier screws and their use of serial repetition, yet they employ less tongue-in-cheek double entendre and more art historical and cultural nods to the past—from Edvard Munch to M17 gas masks. As much as these paintings reflect a climate of ubiquitous violence and uncertainty, they are, at their core, diaristic expressions of an artist confronting her own impermanence.

7 years of The New York Artists’ Memorial Garden 🌿

Presented by Art Production Fund and White Columns in partnership with NYC Parks, this long-term public art project is embedded in Jackson Square Park in the heart of Greenwich Village. Thirty-four New York–based artists each dedicate a park bench to someone (or something) meaningful to them, marked by simple engraved plaques.

The result is a collective memorial honoring influential figures from James Baldwin to Maya Deren, Alice Coltrane to Linda Nochlin, whose legacies continue to shape generations of artists.

Visit a bench at the intersection of 8th Avenue and Greenwich Avenue.

The Bunker Library is a cabinet of curiosities, where art, books, and objects play, mingle, and connect. A lot of heart goes into it. This year we focused on significant moments and texts that have expanded the conversation around queerness across the decades.
