POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is something I feel really strongly about, and I wanted to share it here. 🤍

There is currently a petition before the New Zealand Parliament calling for stronger sentencing for sexual offences, particularly those committed against children.

The petition is asking Parliament to:

• Increase the maximum sentence for sexual violation, including making life imprisonment an available maximum sentence
• Increase maximum sentences for sexual offences against children
• Strengthen penalties for child sexual abuse material offences
• Introduce minimum prison terms and remove home detention as an option for certain child sexual abuse material offences
• Require at least two-thirds of a prison sentence to be served before parole eligibility.

The petition highlights that, under the current law, there are significant differences between the maximum penalties for different sexual offences, and that people convicted of serious offences can become eligible for parole after serving only part of their sentence.

As a midwife, I work with women, babies and families every day. Protecting children and creating a society where women and children are safe from sexual violence is something I believe deserves serious attention.

If this is something you feel strongly about, you can read the full petition and its reasoning and decide whether you’d like to add your name.

The petition is open until 15 June 2027.

It was an honour to attend the Valetictory speech of @andrewbaylymp yesterday in Wellington. A fantastic speech about the good, bad and ugly of politics.

Andrew has been a fantastic local MP for Port Waikato. During his 12 years in Politics, Andrew has worked hard to represent all our local communities. What really stood out to me through his speech was this account of being our Local MP during Covid. The stories of how the Auckland southern boundary split and divided families, with the lasting effects still impacting our communities today.

Like many before him, there is always things that are left unfinished. For me personally, his real legacy is the work he did for small business and for future generations with financial literacy. Andrew was pivotal in championing business reforms that mean large corporations must report the speed in which they pay small businesses, which ultimately encourages payments to happen faster.

As a small business owner myself, this is so important, when regular payments mean the difference between paying wages and keeping the lights on.

The second is the introduction of the Financial Literacy curriculum into our schools. As Andrew said, it is not only important for young people, but also to society in general. We must ensure we are setting our young people up for success in the real world.

Thank you to for your hard work Andrew, and I know as the next National Party Candidate for Port Waikato my job is to continue to build on your legacy and the many proud New Zealand National Party MPs that have come before.

Inspiring to visit Singapore’s Supreme Court and learn more about a justice system recognized for its efficiency, innovation and strong administration of the rule of law.

Beyond the Court’s impressive architecture, the visit provided valuable insight into Singapore’s approach to the administration of justice and how its institutions support efficient, timely and effective outcomes.

Exchanges like this offer an opportunity to learn from other jurisdictions, share perspectives, and bring ideas home. As Ontario continues to modernize its justice system, we continue to consider how jurisdictions around the world are improving access, efficiency and service delivery.

Walking through the exhibition at @techlaw.fest, it was great to connect with leaders from around the world working at the intersection of law and technology.

The conversations offered valuable perspectives on how emerging technologies and digital innovation can modernize legal services, improve efficiency and expand access to justice.

It was also a valuable opportunity to see how justice systems around the world are evolving, exchange ideas and consider how those lessons can help us continue strengthening and modernizing Ontario’s justice system.

I think @businessdesknz needed a little help fixing this HEADLINE from their awards last night in Tamaki Makaurau.
I don’t know about you, but I’m not proud of a company #rocketlab - that is profiting from genocide.
Rocketlab knows the risks in doing business with Blacksky, as do our government and they are ALL IGNORING IT!

On Wednesday afternoon, I had the honour of being invited to Dr Shane Reti’s valedictory function, marking the end of his 12 years representing Whangārei in Parliament.

Dr Reti was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Whangārei in 2014, making history as the first Māori MP to represent the electorate. Over the past 12 years, he has taken on a number of roles in Parliament, including Minister of Health and Minister for Pacific Peoples. During his valedictory he reflected on some of the health achievements he was most proud of, including the increase in cancer treatment funding, extending breast cancer screening to women aged 70 to 74 and the new radiotherapy centre at Whangārei Hospital.

Of course, representing an electorate is about more than the achievements we hear about in Parliament. A lot of the work happens behind the scenes through meetings, conversations with constituents, local businesses and community groups and advocating for the issues that matter to the people that live here. That side of the job can be easily overlooked and hearing Hon Judith Collins KC Collins and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon speak about their time working alongside Dr Reti gave a good insight into some of the work and relationships that come with the role.

What I enjoyed most about the valedictory was hearing some of the stories from those 12 years. Hearing about the people he has met, the experiences he has had and some of the moments that have stayed with him gave me a much more personal perspective on his time in Parliament. Politics will always come with different opinions and people will not agree on everything but there is something to be said for representing the same community for the last 12 years.

For Whangārei, Dr Reti has been a familiar face in our community for more than a decade. He has been part of our community through a lot of change and Wednesday was a chance to reflect on that, acknowledging the time he has given to representing our region and to celebrate the end of his time in Parliament.

Dr Shane Reti, I wish you and your family all the very best.

News: The FBI’s new base in Wellington may have only been opened as an excuse for a sightseeing trip by the bureau’s director Kash Patel, US Democrats have claimed. During the trip, Patel gifted plastic 3D-printed replica revolvers to senior New Zealand security officials, which were subsequently destroyed by local authorities because they were illegal to possess under strict local gun law.

What to even say... from prayers to curtseys. The Honourable Judith Collins departs our parliament, I already miss her... 😁

Would loved to have given her a Political Cut, we did her star chart once on PCZB aye @erikagrant_astrologer ✨

Who would have thought in 2026 she would be one of the wise heads, tells us a lot about who are our politicians are today. 🤗

Formidable, unrelenting & unapologetic... has been donkey deep in SO MUCH dodgy behaviour. Ask her hubby... 🙃

Talofa

Will you miss her as much as me..?

Thank you @judithcollinsmp for your selfless dedication and service to New Zealand, and thank you especially for your loyalty and your contribution to the National Party. What a brilliant valedictory speech, it is just too short to cover 24 long years of service in this Parliament.
