Studio Simpa collects tracks from the past decade of the neo-traditional Dagomba dance genre, modernized traditional percussion dance - produced by Mohamed “Ebony” Fuseini, recording drums on his phone and recreating the sound of traditional music via FL Studio. Collaborating with “Gawani”, flashy singers from the surrounding villages and local VCD producers, Ebony created hyper-electronic versions of simpa for the local video market, complete with suggestive videos of women shaking their hips - light cultural transgression in the predominantly Muslim Dagomba North.

Studio Simpa released July 17th as the debut vinyl release of @autotunetheworld as a label, building from the foundation of the long-running Autotune the World cassette series and NTS Radio show, initiated by Sahel Sounds’ Christopher Kirkley.

Yawuza Alhassan is a dancer, musician and culture worker from Dagbon, Northern Ghana who grew up performing simpa alongside other Dagomba social dances including Bamaya and Jera. He lives in the Bronx and leads th

The Bantanba… As a child this was the most anticipated part of any performance I went to. To share the stage with the great artist who inspired me was necessary for my development, and is a huge part of our culture!

Huge thank you to those who came to our series at the @judsonchurchnyc !
This is a part 1 of the 4 part recap!!!

Calling all massive to the house of God.

GROOVY GROOVY presents 𝑨 𝑺𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝑩𝒐𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒆 at Judson Memorial Church @judsonchurchnyc. Live in New York City on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

We’ll transform Judson’s main sanctuary into a groovy playground. The evening opens up with a free meal around sunset. At the hour, Kia Islam will guide a groundation comprised of gentle sound, movement and breath, softening the body-mind vessel to receive the gospel — served in form of booty-shaking African music magic. Yawuza Alhassan & modrums will present a live hybrid Studio Simpa performance, celebrating the release of the compilation Studio Simpa: Digital Dance Music on VCD from Dagbon, Northern Ghana. Akanbi closes out the session with a DJ set. Really good music will be in abundance. Your presence in marking this special occasion is bigly required. Come & play.

Free entry to all. Please consider leaving a donation. Early arrival is highly recommended for the full immersive experience.
