As our 17th annual Surfers For Salvation mission trip comes to an end, I’ve found myself reflecting on this year a little differently.

One of the greatest gifts this trip gave me was a new perspective.

I always work when I come to Nicaragua, balancing the mission while also keeping things running back home. This year, I intentionally stepped away from my work back home. Several of our teens were old enough to drive themselves, so I wasn’t behind the wheel either. And after years of road construction, the roads are finally done and are really nice.

Instead of juggling work or focusing on the drive, I found myself noticing the people, the villages, and the beauty of this country in a way I never had before.

One of the sweetest parts was watching the teens we brought with us make memories of their own. They laughed together, served together, prayed together, and I watched them grow in their leadership.

I also got to see another side of the ministry. I watched how naturally everything came together because of the relationships Nic has built over the past 17 years.

What stood out most wasn’t the planning—it was the people.

The families who welcome us, the managers and staff where we stay, the drivers, business owners, and so many others have become an extension of our Surfers For Salvation family. They simply step in because this ministry has become part of their lives too.

Children who grew up in our program—whose education we were privileged to support through school uniforms and supplies—are now adults serving alongside us.

They’re helping children shop for school uniforms, assembling water filters, teaching families how to use and care for them, encouraging the next generation, starting businesses, and faithfully serving their communities.

Seventeen years ago, God placed this ministry on Nic’s heart. What an honor it has been to walk beside him and watch God faithfully grow seeds planted so long ago.

To our Nicaragua family—thank you. We love you, treasure your friendships, and Surfers For Salvation wouldn’t be the same without you.

What a privilege it is to be a small part of His story. 💙🇳🇮🙏🏽

Every year, we bring students from two communities together in Rivas to shop for their school uniforms and supplies. This year, 62 students and 18 volunteers spent the day together.

One of the sweetest parts is watching our team reconnect with these students year after year. Friendships continue to grow, familiar faces are reunited, and new memories are made as everyone walks through the market together.

We always end the day by treating everyone to pizza, and this year Uncle Nic surprised everyone with ice cream too! 🍕🍦 Moments like these are what these relationships are built on.

This is about so much more than school uniforms and supplies. It’s about removing barriers to education, building lasting relationships, and giving these students the tools, confidence, and opportunity to reach their God-given potential.

We’re so grateful to come alongside these students year after year and watch them grow—not just in school, but into the young men and women God is creating them to be.

It was a very good day. 💙🇳🇮🙏🏽

Sometimes ministry starts simply by showing up. 💧💙

Our local friends told us about a community we had never visited before that could benefit from clean water, so we loaded up the filters and headed out.

We parked right in the middle of the street and began walking through the neighborhood, inviting families to come out because we had something special to share with them. Before long, people began gathering around, and right there in the street, we demonstrated how the water filters work and taught each family how to properly use, clean, and care for them.

As more and more people gathered, we only wished we had brought more filters. But now we know—next year, we’ll be back. Another community to serve, more families to bless, and more opportunities to share clean water and the Living Water. 💧🙏🏽🇳🇮
