A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: photographing the 30th Anniversary Issue of FASHION Magazine Canada.

Growing up in London, Ontario, as a teenage boy, I anticipated every issue of FASHION—turning the pages, absorbing the images, and dreaming that one day I might have the chance to work for the magazine myself.

Years later, I found myself photographing its 30th anniversary issue.

Under the editorial vision of Editor-in-Chief Ceri Marsh, together with Fashion Director Susie Sheffman, we set out to create an issue that celebrated not only FASHION’s extraordinary history, but the people who had helped define it.

We brought together an incredible team of women and men, both in front of the camera and behind it, celebrating models who had appeared in the magazine throughout its first three decades.

We photographed coast to coast—from Toronto to Vancouver, and on to New York—creating a portrait of the people who had helped shape FASHION’s history.

For me, the issue became about more than fashion. It was a celebration of the extraordinary multiculturalism, individuality and creative spirit that make up the Canadian mosaic.

Looking back at these images now, I’m reminded of the dreams we have when we’re young, the people who give us opportunities along the way, and our responsibility to do the same for the next generation.

“People now ask me if I'm passing the torch. I always explain that no, I'm keeping my torch, thank you very much. And I'm using it to light the torches of others.”

“It takes a global village.” — Marshall McLuhan

Looking back at some of my FASHION Magazine covers from the Noughties, I’m reminded of what an extraordinary time it was to make images.

Before Instagram. Before everything was immediate, filtered, shared and forgotten. There was still a little mystery around fashion — the anticipation of seeing a new issue, holding it in your hands, and discovering the images for the first time.

And behind every cover was our own little “global village” — models, stylists, hair and makeup artists, editors, art directors, assistants — all bringing something of themselves to a single image.

The Noughties feel like the last age of innocence in fashion to me.

Here are a few covers from that time — and some wonderful memories of the people who helped create them.

With special thanks to Carol Moskot and Antony Smith, whose art direction helped define these years, and to all the extraordinary people I had the privilege of creating with.
