The first woman in my family to come to Washington D.C. was my great-grandmother, Lizzie Hayes Moody. She was a student at Carlisle Indian School and was farmed out as free labor to wealthy families in D.C. as a cook and housekeeper. On Saturday night, her great-granddaughter directed an all-Indigenous big band at the Kennedy Center and sang in a language she was forbidden to speak.

This is bigger than just a big band performance: this is a cultural reclamation movement.

Love and gratitude to the musicians who joined me on stage, to the fierce femmes of the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, to the folks at The Kennedy Center, and to the Indigenous matriarchs who led the way, who sacrificed so very much, who stood boldly in the face of oppression, who prayed for this day. We are the prayers of our ancestors. We are the future in motion.

THIS WEEKEND Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band on Áak’w Ḵwáan Territory.

“It is a rarity to see a single Indigenous jazz musician nowadays, let alone sixteen on stage at a single time. Even rarer to see female Indigenous jazz players… The Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band is both a reflection of a time long forgotten and a window into the future. It is the bridge for all peoples to see themselves on the bandstand regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, or socio- economic status.”

🎶Friday 7pm | Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall

🎶Saturday 2pm | UAS Noyes Pavilion

🎶Saturday 7pm | The Crystal Saloon (6-piece combo)

March was a month. Winter left me with a vengeance and Spring gave me a warm welcome. Pharyngitis sucks. But at the end of the month I got to see my cousin Julia. She was a nice reminder of home and a a fun subject to interview along with Delbert Anderson. Now the sun is shining and filming is in swing. Looking forward to Easter.
