POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Is self-doubt a writer’s fuel? Can it be converted into confidence, action, resilience in the face of rejection? These are a few of the questions I’ll be looking at in this online session for the @thesocietyofauthors on Sept 18. Message me if you have any queries. Hope to see you there. 🦋

Join me for a workshop in which we take The Birthday Letters by Ted Hughes as inspiration for our own potent. autobiographical poem. July 24 - tickets in the @cheltenhampoetryfestival biog.

We will of course look at symbolism and a few foxes !

Included in the bold, moving and highly charged Birthday Letters Hughes is a poem inspired by Hughes refusal to buy a fox cub from a young lad he meets in the street.

This repudiation of the wild and feral symbolises Hughes later sense of guilt about he perhaps should have faced the animal impulses and conflicts within him, and his marriage with Plath.

He writes -

“And as it grew up and began to enjoy itself
What would we do with an unpredictable,
Powerful, bounding fox?
That long-mouthed, flashing temperament?
That necessary nightly twenty miles
And that vast hunger for everything beyond us?
How would we cope with its cosmic derangements
Whenever we moved?

...If I had grasped that whatever comes with a fox
Is what tests a marriage and proves it a marriage--
I would not have failed the test.”
― Ted Hughes, Birthday Letters

Feeling exhilarated, inspired and recharged after tonight's 20th Century Sonnets workshop. It was wonderful to talk about this miraculous container, this beautiful box for our dreams and to write broken, reshaped and pure versions of the form.
I was devasted ( in a good way) by the poems that my class wrote - and subjects were as wide and various as the trapping of time, chess, how it feels to be an un/emerging poet, grief, eco-cide, dreams and much more!
Thank you everyone who came and wrote with me - it was a joy to share the community and creativity of the zoom room.

Last night we added a few more places to my (soldout ) sonnet workshop - they have been snapped up. And I am not suprised - I have been sharing some glorious examples of the form.
Here's one more, Carol Ann Duffy's poignant and affecting english sonnet - Prayer.

Thank you to everyone who has booked ! I can't wait to work with you on wednesday.
It's wonderful to have such an international group.

Ps - Please check your emails tonight as you will have some reading to do in advance of the class.

Happiness doesn't always ' write white' - I love this sensual, joyful, and wide-eyed poem. In advance of my Happiness poetry workshop tomorrow night I am sharing the poem.

' O, to take what we love inside,
to carry within us an orchard, to eat
not only the skin, but the shade,
not only the sugar, but the days, to hold
the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into
the round jubilance of peach.'

From Blossoms
BY LI-YOUNG LEE

From blossoms comes
this brown paper bag of peaches
we bought from the boy
at the bend in the road where we turned toward
signs painted Peaches.

From laden boughs, from hands,
from sweet fellowship in the bins,
comes nectar at the roadside, succulent
peaches we devour, dusty skin and all,
comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat.

O, to take what we love inside,
to carry within us an orchard, to eat
not only the skin, but the shade,
not only the sugar, but the days, to hold
the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into
the round jubilance of peach.

There are days we live
as if death were nowhere
in the background; from joy
to joy to joy, from wing to wing,
from blossom to blossom to
impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.
