The Revolution of 1972 1972 changed womenā€™s tennis forever. In the early 1970s, newspapers called them the ā€œwomenā€™s libā€ players. Billie Jean King and the other members of the Original 9 had a much simpler goal: equal treatment. They were filling stadiums but earning only a small fraction of what the men received, so they decided to build their own tour. Before that, many female players had to negotiate directly with tournament organizers just to receive modest appearance fees. In some cases, looks counted for more than results on the court. Everything began to change when the new circuit secured half a million dollars in sponsorship. Billie Jean King, Julie Heldman ( Daughter of Gladys Heldman (1922ā€“2003) was one of the most influential figures in womenā€™s tennis. She is best known for founding World Tennis magazine) and the other pioneers showed there was a strong market for womenā€™s tennis. As one famous advertising slogan of the era put it, ā€œYouā€™ve come a long way, baby.ā€ #tennis #tennishistory #tennislegend #wtatennis #billiejeanking

Julie Heldmanā€™s Driven (A Daughterā€™s Odyssey) is an unflinchingly honest and deeply compelling memoir that sheds light on her extraordinary yet tumultuous life. A fierce competitor on the court, Heldman was a cerebral and crafty player who reached No. 5 in the world, won the 1969 Italian Open, and played a crucial role in the U.S. Fed Cup victories. She toppled legends like Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, and Chris Evert, proving time and again that her intellect and resilience made her a formidable opponent. But Driven is about more than just tennis. It is a raw and courageous exploration of Heldmanā€™s struggles with mental illness, depression, and the shadow of her domineering mother, Gladys Heldmanā€”founder of World Tennis magazine and a key architect of womenā€™s professional tennis. Despite Gladysā€™ influence in the sport, her relentless ambition and emotional detachment left Julie battling deep psychological scars. With gripping storytelling, Heldman also details her role in the historic 1970 Virginia Slims Circuit, which revolutionized womenā€™s tennis. Driven is more than a memoirā€”itā€™s a testament to perseverance, survival, and the power of finding oneā€™s own voice in the face of overwhelming odds. A must-read for tennis enthusiasts and anyone drawn to stories of resilience. @julieheldman
