Every year @kidsbooksirel puts together a reading guide featuring the best children’s books of the year written or illustrated by an Irish writer or artist.

I was delighted to illustrate this year’s cover for 2026! I wanted to capture the feeling of discovering the magical world of books for the first time and the excitement of sharing your favourite stories with your friends. I also created the accompanying poster too, which has an alternative version of this illustration with little spin on it 💫

If you see them out and about please don’t hesitate to tag me or send them to me because I won’t get to see them on the street this time and it always makes me happy to see my work out there in the real world! 🌍✨

It’s understandable that much of the focus regarding this #Kerry team centers on the Clifford brothers, Seanie O’Shea etc but how good has @dylangeaney02 been this championship. He’s a big game player and so hard to stop when in full flow. Such a delight to watch him float over those 2-pointers game after game. Keep it going Dylan! #ciarraíabú

A recap from the Young Environmentalist Awards 2026: what a success! 🌍🌟🏆

This year we had over 340 registrations and over 7000 young people taking part from across the island of Ireland. We were proud to present 28 awards on Tuesday, and celebrate not only the groups receiving awards, but every young person who stepped forward with ideas, action and solutions for a more sustainable future.

A huge thank you to every young environmentalist who participated, and a special thanks to the YEA Mentors the teachers, educators, youth workers and supporters who guided and encouraged them along the way.

We would like to sincerely thank President Catherine Connolly for her thoughtful written message, which was shared during the awards ceremony by Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO. This message acknowledged the inspiring work and dedication of the young people involved in this year’s programme.

We were delighted to welcome The Deputy Lord Mayor Gayle Ralph, a very special guest on the day. Thank you for coming to this year's awards, we hope you enjoyed the incredible showcase of youth passion and dedication on display!

We were also delighted to have a special address from Chris Castle, Director of Section for Peace and Sustainable Development at UNESCO. We would like to extend our gratitude for joining us in celebrating and recognising the remarkable achievements of young environmentalists from across the island of Ireland.

We are deeply grateful to all of our funders and sponsors for supporting youth-led environmental action and helping make the programme possible: the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, the Department of Education and Youth, the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Irish Environmental Network, the Environmental Protection Agency, Pobal, SEAI, Enrich, Uisce Éireann, and Goodbody Clearstream.

Finally, thank you our MC Clara Murray who brough energy and enthusiasm throughout the day, Don King who provided dance breaks during the ceremony and of course, the ECO-UNESCO staff team, volunteers and members of the Youth Advisory Panel whose hard work, energy and commitment made the Final Showcase such a success.

🟢🟡 Absolutely DELIGHTED to see An Gaeltacht and Ballymac crowned All Ireland football champions today in Croke Park. It would amazing if Dingle could win next weekend in the senior final to complete a clean sweep by clubs from the Kingdom!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but an object can tell the story of a lifetime.
The truth of that is evident as Karen Hoban (photographed here by @julienbehal ) talks about the silver-plated tea-set which was given to her mother by Mayo County Council when she got married in 1972. But there was nothing silver-plated about the harsh push out of her position that came with it, otherwise known as the marriage bar.
Mary Staunton, as she was then, “was unceremoniously dumped out of her job because she, of all things, got married”, to quote the no-nonsense words of Culture Minister Patrick O’Donovan at the launch of the thought-provoking Changing Ireland Galleries exhibition at Collins Barracks in Dublin last week.
He was particularly moved by the tea-set, one of some 250 objects designed to offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on Ireland over the last century. He urged children to go to see it as a reminder of how women were once treated in this country.
And what treatment. The marriage bar forced tens of thousands of Irish women out of their public-service jobs between 1924 and 1973. The impact of that is still too vast to contemplate. All those lost contributions to society. All of those women prevented from making them.
It's chilling, too, to see the 1950s steam press from the Donnybrook Magdalene Laundry and think of the women who suffered unimaginable pain.
It beggars belief now that a dress worn by Áine Ní Cheanainn, the only woman appointed to the authority of RTE in the 1960s, had to have sleeves added before she met the then-Archbishop of Dublin John Charles McQuaid.
There is so much to celebrate here too - Rory Gallagher's Fender Stratocaster and the exquisite sculptures by artist Kathleen Cox from the 1930s.
And there's much to send you hurtling down memory lane - a bottle of Milk of Magnesia indigestion tablets, for example.
What object would you choose to represent your life?
Minister O'Donovan says a 7p pack of Taytos × 5, one for each of the O'Donovan children when they were sent to the shop to buy cigarettes for their parents.
Enjoy this fantastic exhibition at Collins Barracks.
