To ensure that the complex is maintained and the project is not threatened by strong currents, predators, algae growth, and other threats, we have set up a maintenance plan. Until the Coral Castle is entirely sustained by nature, our cousins from the local community group @nuansapulau_official together with the marine park officials will take care of the Coral Castle.

The following tasks are included in the maintenance:
-Removing algae off the structures
-Resettling coral predators like Drupella snails and the Crown-of-thorns starfish
-Relocating dead coral rubble nearby living coral fragments
-Retightening coral fragments and cutting the ends of cable ties.
-Documenting losses in coral fragments and their taxonomical affiliation
-Controlling the height and knots of the coral fence

The funding for the maintenance work was provided by donations from @chanceforchange_ev.

The full video in 16:9 can be found on our YouTube “Coral Cousins”.

The shape of a manta ray is outlined by our coral fence. Besides an attractive design, the coral fence provides a valuable service to the Coral Castle and the reef around it. As rubble movement limits the natural resettlement on the reef, the coral fence is meant to trap dead coral pieces before they can access the complex. Conclusively, the natural resettlement enhances within the complex. Mostly fast-growing branching Acropora species were used as their growth needs to catch up with the accumulation of coral rubble. Until the corals grew big enough to settle on the substrate we need to keep the rubble movement under control in our maintenance.

Our structures are now transplanted with corals of various taxonomical affiliations. We believe high coral diversity enhances the impact of coral reef rehabilitation efforts for marine life. New results of a survey carried out by Raffael and @bluecornermarineresearch, verify these assumptions. On a nearby reef, the study investigated variations in fish appearances on artificial reef structures with different degrees of coral species diversity.

The position in which corals are transplanted should be also considered to minimize coral losses and maximize the ecosystem integrity of a reef. Here is a small insight into our plans for the Coral Castle. How good these plans work out will evaluate our monitoring.

We hope to inspire others to imply each coral’s characteristic into their transplantation plan. Please reach out if you wish further details or want to get in touch with us.
Also, don’t miss out to visit our website for further information on our services.

Special thanks to the marine park authorities for taking good care, @nuansapulau_official for their generous coral donations, our cousins who dedicated time and effort to implement the Coral Castle, and all generous donators who supported us financially.

Peace, love, and restoration to all cousins out there!

To ensure the greatest ecological value of the project, we had to plan carefully which corals to plant on the Coral Castle and in which composition. We decided to use a mix of corals from different origins.

Together with the marine park authorities, we collected fragments that broke off their mother colony and had little chance of re-attaching to the reef. We also used corals from the nurseries of @nuansapulau_official and took cuttings of selected coral species from healthy donor corals. Again, we were guided by marine park officers who defined ten percent of each coral colony for us.

The use of corals from various origins promoted species richness on the complex and higher variations in adaptive abilities within the corals.
All corals were collected at shallow depths where they were exposed to higher temperatures than in the deeper located Coral Castle. Coral colonies have the ability to acclimatize and become more resilient to elevated water temperatures due to climate change.

At this point we would like to especially thank @nuansapulau_official and the marine park authorities for the successful cooperation. Your assistance and provision of your precious corals were essential for this project.

Securing of the Coral Castle

We adjusted our restoration measure to the strong currents of the site using security legs which we fixed all around our structures. We cut them into two-meter-long legs, sharpened them for easier hammering and welded hooks to hold the ground floor of each structure in the sediment. Each of our tall structures are now held in the sediment by 11 meter rebar poles.

Special thanks to the marine park officials and the coral restoration community @nuansapulau_official for the great help and support!

🪸 What are the living and non living things found in the coral reefs???

A coral reef is an underwater ecosystem! It's home to thousands of plant and animal species, to living and nonliving things, that all depend on each other. 🌞🌊🪸🐚🪨

Nonliving things include the air, water, sunlight, soil, and minerals that animals, plants, bacteria, and other living things need to survive! 🐢🦑🐠🐬🦈

🪸 How do plants and animals interact in coral reefs???

As animals eat the plants and other animals, energy is passed through the food chain. 🪸🐙🐠🐡🦈

Reef building corals work together with microscopic algae, called zooxanthellae, that live in their tissue.

The zooxanthellae provide oxygen and food to the coral through photosynthesis. 🪸🌊

🪸 Why are corals important to the Ocean???

Coral reefs provide an important ecosystem for life underwater, protect coastal areas by reducing the power of waves hitting the coast, and provide a crucial source of income for millions of people! 💫🪸🤗

Coral reefs teem with diverse life! Thousands of species can be found living on one coral reef! 🐢🐙🐡
