MIFW 2026 dump because apparently we're a serious international film organization now and should probably post these.

Writer-Director-Producer Julio Rionaldo (@juliorionaldo) represented the Cinema of Indonesia at III Moscow International Film Week, talked about film enterprises, global opportunities and his whole cinema as monuments thing, met a bunch of people, and survived the event.

so here you go.

📸 Moscow
🎬 cinema people
🤝 meetings
🇮🇩 Indonesia
🇷🇺 Russia
🤧 one terribly ill filmmaker

Also, if you're a filmmaker / producer / distributor / exhibitor / cinema nerd somewhere between Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Russia and the CIS: we should probably know each other.

There's a lot of cinema happening in all these places, and we'd rather build the bridges than keep talking about how nice it would be to have them.

Films should travel. People should travel. Ideas should travel.

So let's make them.

Consider this your invitation :) 📨

Bestiary — Director Notes:

This film was made a long time ago.

At the time, its director was still a young wunderkind who probably thought he knew what he was doing (Plot twist: he does not).

The film was intimate. It was strange. It was about sorrow, and about the things people carry with them after someone is gone.

Then we let it go.

It travelled to places we never expected. It was watched by people we never knew. And slowly, it became less about the people who made it and more about the people who found something of themselves in it.

After one of the premieres, an old woman came up to the director. She spoke a language he didn't understand. He spoke a language she didn't understand.

But she wanted to thank him.
She told him that Bestiary reminded her of someone she had lost.

And for a moment, the person who made the film didn't really have anything to say. Because there she was, standing in front of him, carrying a feeling that had nothing to do with him anymore. She had made it hers.

I think that's one of the strangest things about making movies.

You spend so much time trying to make something mean something.

And then, if you're lucky, someone somewhere finds their own meaning in it.

Maybe that's why we make things in the first place. Maybe someone will see this, far away. Maybe they will feel something they thought only belonged to them.

And maybe, for a little while, they will feel understood.

Maybe that's what happens when you make something.

You let it go. And sometimes, it travels farther than you ever could ever imagine.

To every artist who chose to create instead of conform, thank you.

To the photographers who waited for the right light.
To the filmmakers who kept their cameras rolling.
To the writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, dancers, designers, performers, and makers who continue to imagine different futures. This celebration belongs to you too.

Every act of creation is a quiet refusal to accept the world as it is. Every story shared, every image made, every idea brought to life pushes back against indifference and reminds us that imagination still has the power to transform.

Here’s to everyone brave enough to keep making.

The world needs your vision more than ever.

Someone once asked us what a Director actually does.

Some say they are the stewards of modern storytelling?
Some say they are just crazy people, who are so insane, they manifest entire worlds out of imaginations?

The honest answer is:

Nobody really knows.

Some spend years staring at the horizon thinking about liminal spaces.
Some disappear into the wilderness with a camera and no plan.
Some make entire films just to point out how ridiculous society is.
Some can find beauty in literally anything.
Some somehow make impossible productions land on time.
Some stare into the cosmic void.
Some lock characters in rooms and make everything go horribly wrong.
Some make you call your parents afterwards.

Anyway.

We cherish the Directors of the Round Table at our Order ⚔️🎥

A collective roster of filmmakers united by camaraderie, questionable life choices, and the persistent belief that stories are worth making.

Swipe through their legend:
Sir Julio Rionaldo
Sir Amarl Al Kautsar
Sir Bahreisy Imaadudien
Dame Serena Arsletta
Sir Farhan La Galigo
Sir Yeremia Kevin
Sir Ega Aditya
Sir Abirama Mahendra
You might find your favorite boss fight.

And if you're carrying a story of your own, we're always looking for future Directors ;)

Julio Rionaldo: Liminal Cinema

The Jakarta-based cinéaste crafts cinema that is difficult to categorize.

Audience responses reflect that: Some disconnect. Some hold onto specific moments. Pauses, lingering feelings, gestures that feel complete without explanation.

These moments exist outside the film’s forward movement. Points where the narrative stops and stays long enough for something to register.

This is often described as the “liminal space” of his films. It isn’t accidental, but it isn’t rigidly planned either. It’s consistent throughout his filmography, where time stops and visceral emotions bleed through the screen to the audience. Long after the credits roll.

Within that space, the process shifts. Actors stop aiming for precise performance and respond more instinctively. Cinematographers observe instead of impose. Scenes extend if something is still unfolding.

The work becomes less about executing a plan and more about recognizing when something real is happening and not interrupting it.

The audience experiences something similar. Instead of recalling plot, they remember sensations. Moments that feel personal, even if they can’t fully explain why. Sometimes like remembering something lived rather than watched...

We bump into moments.
they invite us in.

It felt random.
It never was.

We call it coincidence.
Then we call it cinema 🎥🎞️

I moved to Asia almost 1,5 years ago.

The first year was really hard —
even though from the outside it probably looked like everything was fine.

There was a lot of uncertainty,
a lot of moments where I didn’t feel grounded at all.

But during this time, I changed a lot.
And the way I see the world changed too.

It wasn’t easy,
but I’m really glad I once decided to do it.

Because despite everything,
it became a turning point that changed everything
