What makes art “real art”. It’s not all about talent alone. In this reel I break down the three properties of a work of art and how to identify them the next time you stroll through an art gallery or museum.

From color theory and art critiques to art history and events, I’ve got you covered.

• ( A prayer for the discouraged)

“Let my cry come before thee, O LORD:
give ear unto my prayer.

Socially distant from society
but thou art never distant from me.
Even in times of sorrow thou art with me.

I shall call upon thee like a song in the night
and praise thee every morning;
Your mercies are renewed within me
every time I speak your name.

You are my light.
You are the God of my salvation.

You count every rain that drops from the clouds
and wipe every one of my tears.

Oh Lord, my Lord
You are near to the brokenhearted
And You build them back up
again and again.”

The Fall/Winter issue of Pigment Magazine features a Q&A with McArthur Foundation Genius Grant recipient Dawoud Bey. The photographer and educator, known for his large-scale art photography and street photography portraits, including American adolescents in relation to their community, and other often marginalized subjects. He is a professor and Distinguished Artist at Columbia College Chicago. In this issue of Pigment Magazine he is in conversation with Nalani McClendon with whom he discusses the evolution of his iconic Harlem series of photos, and photographers who have influenced him. And see what Dawoud is doing now in our piece Capturing a Moment in Time that explores how COVID and the racial unrest has impacted artists.

Black Fine Art Month Continues Thursday, October 15 - Valuing the Black Owned Art Gallery – Produced by Cynthia Henry, Milwaukee and Idris Odunewu, Miami

The Black owned art gallery is a Balm in Gilead for Black artists and collectors. While historically overlooked in the larger art world, the Black gallerist has provided us a place to, not just buy art, but a place to be educated about Black art and artists, connect to artists and in the case of at least one gallery receive free gifts of art. According to a recent article in the New York Times “there is only one African-American gallerist in the 176-member Art Dealers Association of America, a professional group.” Yet because of a dedicated client base the Black gallery continues to grow and thrive and serve as a pivotal connection point in communities across the country. This conversation with gallerist will offer insight into their triumphs and challenges.

Panelists:
Richard Beavers Richard Beavers Gallery Brooklyn, New York
Blaine E. Gibson WE Wealth Management Group, Mequon Wisconsin
Billie Nash Greenwood Park Gallery & Framing, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Keeman Raymar Ayzha Fine Arts Gallery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Dr. Burnetta (Bee) Thomas Beelogica, San Diego, California
Monique Brinkman Hill, South Side Community Art Center

Moderator: September Gray, September Gray Fine Art Gallery
