Oil on canvas

Jungchan Chang’s paintings are distinguished by an extraordinary sensitivity to human presence, character, and emotion. His portraits possess a remarkable realism, yet their impact reaches far beyond technical precision or physical likeness: through quiet expressions, subtle gestures, and meticulous attention to textures, traces, changing light, and the passage of time, Chang creates images of remarkable stillness and emotional depth. This sensitivity extends to his figurative and still-life paintings, where seemingly modest subjects acquire an unexpected intensity and refinement. Rather than using realism simply to reproduce the visible world, Chang turns careful observation into a means of slowing down perception, revealing the quiet beauty and emotional resonance contained within people, objects, and everyday moments.

Thank you @the_portrait_society judges for the exceptional merit award out of 2200 submissions internationally and to everyone who voted for me. I’m truly grateful for your support and I wouldn’t be here without it.

Most importantly, I want to thank my greatest mentor @zhaomingwuartist who I have been studying “weekly” with since 2011, his unwavering guidance has pushed me to strive for deeper expression and to capture the soul in portraiture. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without him - I owe him everything and he is the one who shaped me into the artist I am today. Picking up the award in front of my mentor on stage was a dream-come-true pound moment — one I will never forget. 🙏🙇🙏

Thank you ALL again for your kindness and support, and congratulations to all the fellow award winners! Keep drawing.
