Rick has a voice that exudes calm. When he arrived, his black coat seemed to carry with it the winds of winter in Paris. Cheerfully but with a hint of frustration, he mentioned that he was learning French—such a difficult language. He shook hands with everyone one by one, sat down, and almost always leaned back on the sofa with his legs crossed (not a particularly comfortable posture, but he only adjusted it once).

The interview began. He talked about his early creations and artistic philosophy, narrating everything calmly and eloquently. He mentioned his dislike for checking luggage, always traveling light for short trips, carrying just one outfit, and wearing it wherever he went. He spoke about his granddaughter, and his smile was no different from any other grandfather’s. He reminisced about arriving in Paris when the fashion industry wasn’t as vibrant as it is today, saying that all he wanted was to be an eccentric.

The conversation progressed quickly. His relaxed demeanor soon infected everyone, bringing with it a surprising sense of simplicity and ease. On his French-style stovetop sat two black statues made of basalt with gold and silver inlays—one of the busts was a self-portrait, staring straight at the Rick Owens on the sofa, eloquently engaged in conversation.

In his living room, the murals seemed to overflow with the forms seen in Francis Bacon’s paintings. There was also a chair adorned with massive reindeer antlers, which I moved by the window to use as a prop. After the interview, he generously gave me fifteen minutes for photos, though I ended up using less than ten. The shutter clicked, the flash lit up, and a vivid yet slightly serious Rick Owens was captured.

It was a delightful and memorable shoot.
