[Gotong-Royong Huruf 2021] Number 4 by @junyuenlim for #gotongroyonghuruf

Theme: Suara-suara
.
Designer’s statement:
Ever wondered why the 4th floor doesn't exist? The number 4 is considered an unlucky number in Chinese because it is nearly homophonous to the word "death". Why is it taboo to talk about death in our culture? I think we should embrace the vulnerability of life.

To quote author Frank Ostaseski, “Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight. She helps us to discover what matters most.”

This reminded me of the beautiful stone letter carving that is etched on my grandparent's tombstone.

.
About the designer:
Jun Lim is the co-founder and CEO of @mosseryco, a stationery company based in Petaling Jaya. As a trained graphic designer turned entrepreneur, he finds meaning in sharing good design through the products and experiences he creates with his team at Mossery.

Yesterday marked the end of my 2-year (full-time) journey at @mosseryco. Crazy good memories, experiences and friends. Definitely not the end of my overall journey with them (which started back in 2016!) Its not over! I’ll be back! 🌱

I’ve been to @mosseryco HQ as different people; a customer, a collage artist, and now an intern! It’s been an intense 3 months, but the team’s been amazing. Gonna miss this bunch. Until next time. ✨

Have you joined this month's Creative Challenge? We love everything we're seeing so far and the first #DrawThisPoem illustrations to be featured is by our resident designer, @junyuenlim who chose the poem, PURPLE by @chloelinginmotion!
-
On why that poem in particular, he answered: "I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of duality—left & right, light & shadow, arts & science, day & night—The universe has a balance and many symmetries in it that makes it a beautiful experience. The poem Purple struck a chord in me, especially during this unprecedented time, and acts as a reminder there will always be a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how long we’ve been in this darkness."
-
For those who have chose PURPLE as well, what were your reasons? Share your answers in the comment below! Remember to tag us when submitting your #DrawThisPoem illustrations!
-
For National Poetry Month, we want to celebrate the special connection between writers and readers by encouraging our community to dive into poetry and into themselves. We want to show how through simple empathy and carefully chosen words on a page, human beings have the ability to look inwards and stay connected despite time and space.

In 2016, didn’t have many options for companies to apply at for my first internship because the Kelana Jaya LRT hadn’t been extended yet. But I promised myself I would save enough money so that at the next chance I get to intern, I can afford to pay for transportation to go somewhere I could learn and grow, rather than intern to just fulfil the semester’s requirements and pass time. I also promised myself that I would try my luck and apply at @mosseryco. 🌈😆 It’s made up of small group of passionate and skilled individuals, the kind of place where creativity truly thrives. When I got the job, I felt like I’d been accepted to join the Avengers kay no joke I supadupa happy. And just like that, fast forward after many lunch adventures, a few late nights, and a lot of learning, 3 months went by! :’) I’m so happy I took this chance, and that I was even allowed the opportunity. 🌲🌲🌲

Of poorly-edited photos and well-timed coincidences. My heart is very very full tonight. Full of laughter and joy, all of which i know will leave me very soon.

These feelings are fleeting. I’m attempting to capture them and remember exactly how they feel, and I’m failing just like the rest of the world. But i’m trying. I’m trying nonetheless.

From the exhaustion that was today and the countless twinning (more than you see here) that I’ve had the privilege to be caught in between, I love these people with all that my heart can manage.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. Thank you for being a part of mine.
